The new 4.10s are certainly noisier than the stock 3.45s. I did install the LPW cover that acammer was talking about, so that might be part of it.

Even though the new gears make more noise, the performance advantage is well worth it.

I am trying to remember who it was, but I remember someone saying "I chocked it up to "race car" noises.

I only needed the gears, not the full kit. I can't remember what all came in the kit, but I didn't need it, and had GPI do the gears for me. Taking a diff off is one thing, but setting the gears up is something I wanted to leave to them
Hey Chris49066SS what is GPI and where is it located?

GPI is in Jacksonville, Arkansas (5 hr drive from Nashville) and is a respected shop that can transform your car into a hellaciously fast machine. I took my car there and they did my cam, gears, converter, and tuning. Awesome shop, awesome group.

GPI is the real deal. They have some of the very best cam grinds you can get, all with their awesome proprietary lobe. Their service is also second to none, nothing but very satisfied customers. Those same customers are also DOMINATING the SBE All-motor fast list.

That's pretty much the way I feel about it too. Sacrifices will be made to comfort and convenience in the pursuit of speed.

There are other things that'll heighten gear noise as well outside of the gears themselves - differential bushings and subframe bushings have a lot to do with how much or little noise get's transferred into the car. As you stiffen those components for performance purposes, you increase the noise potential. Add in something like the LPW differential cover support, which has load bolts that tighten right down on the ring gear caps, and give gear noise even more ease to transfer into the cabin.

All that said, a well setup set of gears shouldn't be noisy. Once you've gone hardcore with solid subframe bushings, pro diff bushings, a diff cover, etc, it's not unreasonable that you'd get some noise, but it shouldn't sound like a roots blower in the backseat either.
This is good info.....my 391s make no noise. I was thinking there would be some....but the install was top notch.

The 4.10s are still pretty noisy. At 70 mph it is kinda loud. Gonna drain the oil and put in heavier (75-140) gear oil, also I ordered some dynamat to place under the body above the differential. Hoping that helps to quiet it down some. Otherwise I'm loving the new gears.

Are you almost done with your break-in? Time to get on it!

Bummer dude. I wouldn't hesitate to swing by the shop that did the job and ask them to take a listen if you're not satisfied. Like we discussed a bunch in here, it's not unreasonable for them to make some noise. But if it's obnoxiously loud (and been getting worse) since break-in then I wouldn't hesitate to ask them to make it right.
