Friday

Hmm, I guess lets start here. Let me tell you about my day.

Started out just a typical Friday morning. Alarm don't go off yet. I get up before it goes off... its Friday, lets get this over with.

Mildly excited, today I drive the Camaro after its been sitting all week.

Hopped in, hear that thing roar alive... Vroooooom... ahhhh, heaven.... Love this car.

Still dark - I jump on the 91... traffic, thick - as always... but not for long, my exit is a few miles away I-15 up to I-10. There's a local car wash in the area near my shop. Spray er down! Get that dust off... soap, rinse, spot-free...

Moving on. Its a work day, nothing special... except the company party, late in the day into the night...

No big deal, it was a a cool get-together with the people I work with... cool folks, good people...

Anyway, had a couple of drinks, then some dinner and later headed home...

Now what did I do with my Camaro today? I drove it... MAN, I drove it... how quick it accelerates... this thing is untouchable, unless, you know... something faster comes along. Nothing faster came along today. Damn tho... again, I am grinning having some real good clean fun with this ride... 145k later... this ride is just... man. You'd think you were driving a car with 100k less.

I took the long way home I'm sure you peeps can appreciate that... exited the freeway... only to soon come across a DUI checkpoint.

Now, this is where the story gets real interesting. I come across this checkpoint. The officer stops me, with a car ahead... asks for my license. Sure, ok. I get it.

He walked away for a moment and came back. He asked me to step out of the car. Now, I didn't have much at all to drink tonight as mentioned earlier. Just what would still be under the limit and this before a good dinner and desert. I. Was. Good!

To prove it, here I am - writing about my experience a bit ago - after what just happened.

So the officer asked me to step out of my car. Door wide open he pulls me aside, asks some questions which I answer clearly and honestly. He walks me up a parking long and into a driveway with like 10 bikes, a huge RV (their command center because I asked them), and a Trailer at the end of it full of traffic control gear. Like 20+ police men and women holding up the area just ready to pounce on anything suspicious... actually made me feel proud if you can believe that, nevermind the situation I found myself in... damn, this is cool - thought!

Now, I am an American. Navy Veteran (Gulf War). I am Proud to be an American. I will protect this country with my life... and so it all came back to me. How proud to see these men and women protecting the streets from drunks and punks who are out to no good. And here I am... suspicious to the officer? Okay, fine... lets do this (like I had a choice lol).

After I walked up the driveway, I turn back and see and hear my car following behind me. It was actually pretty cool, I thought. You don't often see anyone driving your car... especially if you service it yourself 99 percent of the time... looks mean, looks good... as I was being escorted to an unknown situation.

My car now parked beside me across the lot... the officer I am walking with says, 'SS eh'? I say, yeah... he says, 'Nice car'... I say thanks...

He then asks me to stop... now, for the next 20 minutes, I am going through test after test after test, to see if I am good to drive home... which after about 50 miles, is just 2 miles away fml.

These tests were amazing to be honest. Stand on one foot and count one one thousand, two one thousand until I tell you to stop... Stand still, tilt your head back, count 30 seconds silently then open your eyes and count 30! (to see how accurate I am)... Walk 9 steps heel to toe, up the line, down the line. Follow my finger while I shine a bright ass flashlight in your eyes as I watch your eyes for an deviation and/or discrepancy...... amazing.

I really didn't know what was going to happen at this point... the officer walked away, came back with a more senior officer... and he then began the follow my finger test XD.

Well, all that, he gave me my license back... showed me the exit, and said have a safe drive home. Okay, finally... as I strap in to my Camaro, and hear a guy say ' you're letting him go '? Haha, I chuckled and the officer smiled back.

I thanked them as I walked back to my car... but not for letting me go. For what they're doing. CA has a Shithole of a government and to see good men and women protecting the streets this way made me feel good that at least CA is doing something right.

The situation could have been much worse for those that don't drink responsibly. Drink responsibly this holiday season folks! Be safe out there...

Oh and by all means - Be proud to be an American... no matter what situation its in. Many men and women died so that we could be where we're at, and have what we have, and drive what we drive.

I'm proud to be an American not living in California. There is no way I would accept that experience as normal or something to be proud of.

Let me guess, the California legislature is in session every year. Government run amuck!

CA does more wrong than right. And that seems to get worse all the time. Having said that, it is a privilege, not a right, to drive a car. I presume that’s the case in TX too. When you choose to participate in the club’s privilege, you abide by their rules. Or suffer the consequences. Pete Rose should be in the hall of fame but he broke their rules. Marijuana is legal in California but an employer may make it ‘illegal’ at work. Their right, your privilege.

Second that, Great story though and everyone has the right to feel what they went through was good or bad. A side note after all that time that they took and never gave you a breathalyzer test you would have been let go anyway. A some what good lawyer would had it thrown out of court, as your BAC would have been compromised due to the long time period.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE SPEC and all the other service men and women

Moto-Mojo , have you heard the latest? The CA gov wants to start taxing every txt message that one sends and receives.

Unless my car was driving itself, or they had asked permission to drive it, I'd be PISSED. Really pissed. Really, really, really pissed.

Is that even legal for them to do?

20 Minutes????

You have some serious patience... or you were too drunk to care... but I'd be like "Look, let me blow into the machine or take blood or something because these tests are getting f*cking ridiculous."

Not to mention I can't do some of that stuff 100% sober.

I am proud to be an American! OP, good story! I like how you took the best out of the situation. What you just described, proved that you have some skills to say clam in a very high level stress situation.

I like how you gave personification to your Camaro " After I walked up the driveway, I turn back and see and hear my car following behind me" to stay relax.

Good Story. Thanks for your service. Merry Christmas.

Yes, and retroactively. An out and out license to steal. What’s going on in France will come here too. Let it begin in CA. But viva la Camaro!

Interesting story. I can't believe the detained you for so long without giving you a breathalyzer or anything. I'm with others who would have been upset to see my car following me without me driving it. No need for someone else to drive it.

I like the message though. Be proud to be American, and don't drink and drive. Thank you for your service! I'm grateful for anyone who takes the time to make sure that the person that is behind the wheel is not intoxicated. I almost lost my wife going on 6 years ago now to a drunk driver. It was only by an act of God that she's still alive today.

I must say that I am impressed at your level of patience with those officers. My goodness that had to be annoying to be waiting all that time to get through that checkpoint.

Remind me to never head out to riverside anymore OP. Not the I would ever drive drunk, but I just never have the best luck with these California cops. I lived in Florida last year and never once had cops have any issues with my car. Shoot I was drivin 85 on the freeway once, and a cop speeds up next to me, waves me down to thumps up my car. Now back in CA, I can’t even drive without worrying if I’m going to be pulled over for tinted windows. Anyways glad you are safe and well OP!

great story OP!! Thank you for your service. I have posted before that I was the designated driver on the night of a friend's bachelor party. They could smell the alcohol out of that car and could not believe I had no reading at all. They were pleasant respectful officers and actually shared some laughs with my father who was over the limit. I respect them and will always do as asked. I don't drink at all when i am driving my Camaro as I think it automatically puts a target on your back. With that all said drive safe this Holiday season!!!! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you!

ps they tested everyone in the car (they volunteered!) as a local university was doing a study and they all volunteered to be a part. It was hilarious as my father was "totaled" My father was a good man, world war II vet of Omaha Beach. Thanks Dad, Rest in Peace.
