Sounds like bad or non-existent rev-matching. 2nd to 1st is the biggest ratio jump, so noticing it the most there makes complete sense.

Try watching the tach closely (on a deserted location, please) to see what it does.

You may also wish to experiment with left foot braking plus giving the gas a little kick as you're tapping down, or just kicking the gas during a downshift where you aren't particularly slowing down. I've found that it really is possible to manually rev-match an automatic without tapshift once you get your timing for it down, so a tapshifter should only make this easier.

For those of us who prefer auto over stick (flame on, shift snobs, but I've paid my dues working a clutch leg) and make no apologies, the tapshift works very nicely for those times when I DO want to select a gear, and lock it in... like on my daily commute, which includes over 10 miles of elevation loss on a mountain road. The road is winding and steep, yet I often make the entire drive without even touching the brake pedal. And coming back up that road, when I need to see if that Italian or German car can offer any competition, selecting my own gears sometimes works better than the auto selection does.

I just use the taps for fun. I especially enjoy downshifting and hearing the Solos pop. I'm basically in sport mode all the time, so the extra fun of tapping is always available.

I use it 100% of the time. Shifts just like a manual. All Ferrari and Lamborghini cars use a similar setup.

I use my paddle shifters ALL the time. I will admit that if I physically could drive a manual, I would have one. Since I can't I totally love the paddle shifters.

I don't use the tap shift daily, but when I want to use it I really enjoy it.
OP asked for an opinion on TAPshift, my opinion is it is too Xbox, opinions will vary.

I wish the shift buttons were also on the shifter not just the steering wheel.

Having owned a LS3 and a L99 I prefer the tap shift and lazy auto driving of the l99. Unless you are really into driving a manual transmission and learning how to properly drive it, I can't see a big difference in performance. I don't think a large percentage of LS3 drivers could out-shift any common joe that just slams the gas to the floor.

For those that master it, it's a no brainer. Surprising to see how many new ZL1's and Corvette's are auto compared to stick on dealer lots. Far more autos.

Tapshift is perfect for my generation of lazy people.

I agree; I love tapshift. The fact that my hands don't have to leave the steering wheel is great! I also like the fact that they are small buttons on the 2010. I bought large paddle shifters and they just always got in the way. The later paddle designs are even better. My only issue with tapshift is the delay in shifting after hitting the buttons.

Just go out and play with it. You really can't do any real damage. It will deny shifts if you try something at the wrong time. The worse that will happen is you will take off hard, redline and forget to shift, you will realize it quick.
