Squeal upon LS3 start up?
I'm at 220 miles today. I went out to the car to grab some lunch. Started it up and there was a high pitched squeal that was heard. After I slapped the throttle it got faster and louder and then it went away. Went to lunch, when I came back out to my car after it sat for about an hour, the same noise occured. I have a LS3 with a manual trans.
Anybody else getting this?

Definitely sounds like the serp belt needs to be tightened. Go to the dealer and have them check it. Should not take but a few minutes for them to do this.

Definitely the serpentine belt. The belt tensioner may not be doing its job..it is supposed to keep the belt at the correct tension as the belt naturally loosens over time. Or the belt itself is bad or glazed over. Or one of the pulleys is misaligned.
Here is what you can do to confirm it...spray or drop water on the belt while engine is running (be careful not to get any part of your body or clothing caught while you do this), the high pitch sound will even get louder and last longer until the water dissipates. If this happens, you know it is belt or tension related. Don't use belt dressing to try to fix the squeal. Serp belts don't like belt dressing too much and actually makes them squel louder and longer, not to mention the dressing getting flung all over the place. Take it to the dealer, it is an easy fix. Goodluck. |

That's what I thought as well. I'll swing by there on my way home.

It has an automatic tensioner. Could be some oil or cleaner got on the belt. Probably just needs to be wiped down and driven a bit. But never hurts to let the tech look at it.

tensioner story
I once bought a chevy suburban for $10 because of a bad tensioner
- kept spitting the belt and overheating - dealer changed all accessories on the front of the engine including the tensioner ($4,000) - but put the same OLD pulley back on the NEW tensioner $15 pulley - good as new Highjack over |

I noticed my L99 doing this today.....its going to the dealer this week anyways for the lifter tick noise on startup and for the spoiler paint chip dilema.
Hopefully its nothing serious and just the belt out of alignment.
