Will Camaro answer the Mustang V6 "Mayhem" ???
DEARBORN – The Ford Mustang V6 Performance Package delivers on “fun, fast and affordable,” and now it has an all-new name to go along with that. After Ford reached out to the nearly 1.4 million fans on the Mustang Facebook page, “Mayhem Mustang Package” has been chosen as the new name.
“We saw great enthusiasm from fans, with tons of creative, unique names coming in,” said Brian McClary, Ford social and emerging media specialist. “The contest was twofold – it let us engage with fans by letting them have a say, and it helped build awareness for the package.” More than 3,000 submissions were made to the Mustang Facebook page and nearly 6,700 users installed the “You Name It” app that let them participate in the contest. The winning submission came from a fan in Charlotte, N.C., who has won a three-year lease on a 2012 Mustang equipped with the Mayhem Mustang Package. Facebook fans were asked to suggest a name on the Facebook page and reach out to their friends in the social media world to help propel their choice into the top five names. A gallery on the page let visitors see all of the choices that could be voted on. After the five most-voted names were selected, Ford chose the name that best shows off the personality of the package. Each finalist was run through trademark, copyright and brand approvals. The Mayhem Mustang Package will be used as the name on all Mustang sales, marketing and communications materials. High-tech horsepower The Mayhem Mustang Package takes advantage of Mustang’s 305-horsepower all-aluminum Ti-VCT V6 engine’s lightweight and high-revving nature to deliver a nimble performance car equally at home on a road course or road trip. Borrowing from Mustang GT, the Mayhem Mustang Package includes numerous suspension, braking and body stiffening upgrades to deliver unparalleled handling performance. That road-holding is helped by a near-equal front/rear weight distribution, providing exceptional transient response along with the car’s slimmed-down curb weight of less than 3,500 pounds. The 2012 Ford Mayhem Mustang Package includes: 3.31 rear axle ratio for quicker off-the-line acceleration Mustang GT coupe front and rear stabilizer bars Mustang GT front struts and rear shocks/springs Shelby GT500 rear lower control arm Unique 19-inch wheels Pirelli performance tires for improved grip Mustang GT front and rear brake calipers with Performance Friction pads Strut tower brace for increased body rigidity Unique electronic stability control calibration with sport mode for performance driving Unique badging |

The Mustang's true advantages in performance stem strictly from the 300lb weight advantage and the fact that Ford makes available various axle ratios.
I will say that despite all this the Camaro still remains the better car for me. Looks, body structure, ride, and performance all continue to make me smile.. but the absence of a BOSS fighter (come on Z28) and in the V6 line.. at least a more aggressive rear-axle ratio to push it off the line faster... seriously makes me wonder if Chevy is too focused on F/E of the V6 line |

IMO the Ford "Mayhem" package should include a Ford Racing Intake (ALA GT500), a tune and Ford Racing exhaust.
However, I think GM would do well to not just follow in Fords footsteps, but take the chance to SURPASS Ford at this game. Ford is releasing a performance pack? GM should release a better one. Instead I'm sure all we'll see is a apperance kit that includes "new color edged Camaro floor mats!". Ford seems more interest in more go and less show, where GM seems dedicated to the "more show, less go". |

The reality is that Ford needs about 40 different versions of the Mustang to get any attention right now.... I can't even keep up with the different packages they offer. I think it's something like 7 different packages or so....

The Mustang is getting long in the tooth, and performance is the only way they can go untill a redesign. The 05-09 looks too close to the 10-11 to really excite the masses. The Camaro definatly has the edge on looks and newness, and GM can ride that out for a couple more years. Performance will escalate on all fronts untill CAFE rears it's ugly head.

My observation has been that traditionally, GM and Ford do not want to make their V6 vehicles have super performance for the simple reason that it cuts into their V8 pony car sales. If the V6 is within a few 10ths of the V8 model, why spend the extra cash on an SS or GT? I'd be surprised if Chevy wants to spend a bunch of money to go after the few Ford V6 sales that we are talking about when they would possibly be reducing their own revenue by doing so. I don't see a business case for it. In fact, I think Ford is over expanding the Mustang line. They have to be at the point of diminishing returns. Who is sitting there thinking, "Geez, if Ford would just make <<fill in the blank kind of Mustang>> I'd buy one!"? I'd say not too many people! And the same goes with Camaro buyers excluding those waiting for a Z28 or ZL1.

It's more about personalization at a price than anything else. All the major brands do this. Hell, GM announced the Synergy and 45th anniversary packages recently.

Outside of stickers and upgraded interiors, the Camaro has 2 models.... will have a 3rd next year (ZL1)
Outside of stickers and upgraded interiors, you have about 7 Mustang models..... V6, GT, Boss, "Mayhem", Dub Edition, California Special, Cobra....not to mention the Eco Boost V6 Mustang which is already been confirmed for either 2013/2014... All of those models offer DIFFERENT physical equipment/body parts/performance etc... and then of course you can add the Super Snake/Roush models...but in that instance, you can say the same for the Callaway/SLP model Camaros (i excluded verts since they can come in just about any one of these models...) The point I was making, and still am making, is that all Ford can do to compete with the Camaro right now is throw out more gimmicked up Mustangs. Instead of actually trying to combat the Camaro, they're just throwing a bandaid on it..
