Big Brother OnStar

Got an e-mail from OnStar and it had a paragraph that was for trying the navigation feature. Well I used it once bringing the car home from the dealer and wasn't really impressed with it (wanted me to drive through a Walmart).
I clicked on it anyway and a map comes up with directions to The Oxford Exchange in Alabama. OnStar knew that that was the last place I drove my car to for the MTI Track day! I didn't use OS but it tracked my car and stored the info. That is way scary!

You need an aluminum foil bra for your car so they can't probe it anymore.

yep, you're tracked for life--anything with a GPS. But pretty soon, everything is going to have global positioning--it's started with military applications, then passenger cars, your pets, then people. get used to it or try the aluminum foil thing.

LMAO, I WISH! I use pictures from our own members that just happen to have both cars in the pic. But yes, These two, even their colors, are my dream cars. So if you ever see a pic like this, send me a PM! If they are yours, more power to ya!

OnStar has a polling feature that basically can pick up the location on a signal. So basically they want to send these promos out to people whos e-mail addresses they have (and you're already an onstar subscriber as every car has 1 year free, with the 2LT and 2SS getting Turn by Turn as well), OnStars computer system sends a signal to your car and waits for your next startup, when you start up again it returns the locaton of the car at that time. They already have your home address so its pretty simple to make up the email.

Other Onstar Features work on this principle including the monthly diagnostic report. Thats the fastest way to dump the data. Relax, nobody at OnStar gives a hoot about where you were, they are just trying to get you to buy more.

That is what they want you to think. Anyone with a clue knows that aluminum foil does nothing, you have to get tin foil. The only problem is they have made it very hard to find tin foil and push aluminum foil instead.

Does anyone know for sure if OnStar wasn't activated, can it still be tracked?

As long as the Onstar module is connected in your car, yes.

The only thing you are doing when you activate it is you are setting up an account to associate the car to a person.

Personally, OnStar is a double edged sword. Its great for when you lock yourself out of the car or need help, but the fact that they can monitor you like that and it is exploitable is not cool. The only way to keep them from tracking you via GPS and monitoring you would be to remove the OnStar module (either by removing the power cable, the data cable or the whole unit itself). Activation just ties the car to a persons name
