I used to be Dragoneye...

Just posted this...I've been meaning to for a couple of weeks, now...
http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showth...54#post5031854 I like the look of CamaroFred's solution better, though. It's a shame some of us have to put a front plate on these things at all... |

Dragoneye - I completely agree it is a shame we are forced to spoil the awesome look and functionality of our ZL1 front end to keep it legal. The design criteria therefore is simple: modify the vehicle as little as possible, provide adequate clearance for air to pass through the grille (even behind the plate), and make any hardware remaining when plate is detached as invisible as possible. Many folks have told me to just ignore the law and leave the plate off, but I don't want to give the law any excuse to pull me over.

This is one of the best I've seen... I prefer that they are centered.
Here's another one that is tops on my list, not sure how it will look on a ZL1... http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=73549 |

Fred(and why are some calling you Lou )... a suggestion, maybe you could provide the bend dimensions for the 48" aluminum flat stock that you suggested for others that want to implement it.

MLEE, I just checked out your front mount and think that it seems pretty easy. I thought of one thing you might want to try. Where you put the electrical tape I would recommend removing it. We all know that electrical tape doesn't really like water over time. I would then install shrink wrap, like they sell for electrical wires, on the toggles. The kind that you take like a micro torch or lighter to apply heat and the wrap would conform to the toggle for a tighter fit and longer lasting. Depending on the wrap ir wight also give a type of cushion, so it wouln't cut in when you tighten the screws. Another thing that just popped into my mind is a product that Home Depot sells called Dip It. It's liquid electrical tape, so you could put on as many layers as you would want for more cushion. Not very expensive at all. I have used it on several of my tools that didn't have a grip on them. Product also holds up well in the weather.

Camaro Fred awesome job. I would of never thought of that kind of set up. I've done similar things like that to driving lights to my older camaros where I put fabricated bracketing behind the grill so the lights wouldn't take away from the look, but I would still get the extra lighting, which I always want. Luckily living in PA we don't need front plates yet. But I will definitely keep this in mind. I'm sure it will happen in time.

I got my dad to do this for me (he picked up my ZL1 and is breaking her in for me until I get back to the states). He was unsure of doing it himself, so he took her to a garage to have it done, and he provided all the parts for it. I have no clue what else the garage did, but for the $107 they charged, this bracket better not fail. My dad has known this guy for the better part of thirty years, so I am guessing two hours of labor?
My dad also took pics of the finished job. I approve. Thank you OP for posting this thread before the dealership drilled into my bumper. Question for the OP: What is the Curb Alert Sensor you have on your front bumper? I have never heard of such a thing. I was just going to get curb feelers.... |
