Another new best stock time. Lessons learned.

Today we made the trek up to Cecil county dragway. It has become an annual trip that almost certainly guarantees breaking personal records.

My pass went like this

60'.... 1.681
330'....4.846
1/8.....7.468 @ 94.15
1k......9.702
1/4.....11.591 @ 119.27

The lessons I've learned over the last couple weeks are quite in contrary to what I've read on these sites over the last couple years. Now I'm not saying that the tips I picked up are guaranteed to work for everyone, but I can tell you guys most certainly that this is what worked for me.

Lesson 1... the burnout.

Previously I had learned that a quick "scrub off" of the tires is all that's necessary for these things too hook.

What worked for me... a long smoky burnout almost up to the line. I know there will be a concern about iats getting too high, which is why I make sure I have a long enough cool-down to get the proper burnout without having to worry about getting too hot too quickly.

Lesson 2.... tire pressure

Previously it was thought that anywhere between 24 - 28 psi was optimum for these tires

What worked for me. Between 30 - 31 psi.

Like I stated before, it may not work for everyone... but the person that taught me these techniques is currently number 1 on the stock ZL1 list. He has pulled consistent mid 1.6 to low 1.7s 60' times with his own car. To prove to me that it works, last week,he drove my car to a 1.65 60' on his second pass, on a day when I could not get the car to hook at all using my old method. I have now bettered my previous best 60' of 1.73 several times today.

Incredible. I can't come close to that 60'. Would you be so kind as to share your a little more about your launch technique? T/c on or off? What RPMs are you loading it too, if any? etc.

Good job Dave. You don't have to worry much about IATs when the ambient is in the 40s.... Getting some heat in those cold tires is more important. We all know how the stock Goodyears are when cold...hockey pucks. I am surprised about the 31 psi for the rears. I ran the stock Goodyears only once at the track and my typical street tire pressure for the dragstrip of 22-24 psi seemed to work...my best 60' was a 1.72. That was a nasty 90 degree day and any pressure would have hooked is my bet. Congrats again!

What I found out is that these tires need HEAT! A quick scrub to get the tires clean is just not enough. Believe me, I have a lot of passes in the car in the last 1.5 years. I've tried different methods of launching, different tire pressures, and raced at different tracks. If the track is poorly prepped, though, I don't think it'll matter how well heated the tires are. Once staged, it's matter of getting a feel for the track. On this pass, I actually loaded up the converter a little, released the brake, then fed in the throttle quickly when I detected no slip. The track had really come around by this time because I wasn't able to be this aggressive with the throttle earlier in the day.

Thanks, Dave. I haven't been able to cut anything below 2.0 yet. I never thought 60's like that were close to possible with these tires. I've only done 3-4 sec burnouts, so that clearly seems to be one of the major problems. I would've never guessed PSI of 31...I've been going as low as 20. Granted, I'm still pretty green at this with only 10-12 passes. The strip I go to does good prep work, so there's potential. Thanks so much for the information!

Not a problem, let me know how things work out for you the next time you run. Good luck!

Awesome time man! Really it is... but Correct me if I'm wrong the car is an auto right? I know optimal tire pressure, and heating the tires , etc. all matters but after that it's just push the pedal and go. Computer shifts for ya, no?
So why does a person get props and praise for a time that probably many can duplicate given the same conditions , like the person you refer to as your mentor?
Please don't take this the wrong way, I'm just trying to get some insight. Thanks.

I'm not looking for praise, I'm just posting what the car ran and what it took to get there. We all know how bad these tires are when it's cold. Believe me, it isn't that easy when working with as much torque as this car has. This car is severely traction limited which is why using the best combination of burn-out, tire pressure, and launch technique is important.

I would be willing to bet that these same procedures would work with the manuals and we would probably start seeing them run in the 11s stock.

Yes it's easier than a stick shift car, but you still have to know how to launch and get a good 60ft.

Take your car to the track and post how you do...as it has been stated on other forums "run your car, not your mouth". Please don't take this the wrong way.
