Do I Have the Right ATF?

I'm going to swap out the fluid in the manual transmission and rear diff on my LS3.

Everyone on C5 claims ATF (like I've pictured below) is the right fluid for the manual 6 speed on the LS3. But I just checked the owners manual and it said I should use manual transmission fluid.

Can anyone confirm I have the right fluid, just for the sake of my conscience, thanks!

It'll work just fine. Lots of guys run Redline D4 or MTF. Pennzoil has Syncromesh, Valvoline has something, Royal Purple, take your pick.

STOP!!! you don't want to put automatic transmission fluid [ ATF] in a manual transmission.

Well, I tend to agree with you. But every thread I've read on here claims that Mobil 1 synthetic ATF is the way to go.

Cross reference a GM part number for the stuff and find out if Pennzoil Syncromesh MTF meets the GM part number or spec. I'd think MTF would be a better fit than ATF. ATF gets used in automatics, and transfer cases, and power steering pumps.

Just in case someone else stumbles onto this thread, there are dozens and dozens of owners who have used and recommend Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. You want the bottle exactly as pictured above, because if it is not DEX VI. Repeat, don't buy the bottle that says it's for DEX VI. Mobil 1 especially benefits the synchros when shifting into 2nd gear in cold weather. I'm sure you've all experience that cold 2nd gear grind.

Here's a good link discussing the benefits of using Mobil 1: http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showth...t=63238&page=2

I called Tremec and was told Mobil 1 ATF for the TR6060 performed the best out of the fluids they tested. Mine actually shifts a little smoother now.

See, it's shit like this that makes this forum a damned haven of misinformation.

If you don't really know, why reply? It's so frustrating.

Please stop regurgitating information. If you don't know, don't comment.

This handy dandy little slip of paper I got from my dealer (it's one of the last pages of the parts catalog) and it says part# 88861800 is the manual transmission fluid for a V8.

A quick Google comes back with this fluid being a replacement for DEXRON III in manual transmissions!

OH BOY, DEXRON3 is an ATF!

EDIT:
Quick bit of history. Dexron III ceased to exist as a licensed by GM transmission fluid in December 2006.

Even more info floating around out there. But according to GM, the MTF is the old Dexron III. 1.9 Quarts for V6, 4.2 Quarts for LS3, 4.6 Quarts for ZL1 manual trans.

Quote:
This information applies to 2007 and prior GM passenger cars and trucks.

Dexron III is being phased out as a product name. It is being renamed Manual Transmission Fluid and carries p/n 88861800 U.S. (88861801 Canada).

If fluid p/n 88861800 U.S. (88861801 Canada) is not yet available when servicing a manual transmission or transfer case, Dexron III can be used in its place.

DO NOTÂ use Dexron VI in place of manual transmission fluid in any manual transmissions or transfer cases that specify Dexron III, as a failure may result.

From a FAQ on Mobil website

Quote:
Question: Is New Formulation Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF Usable for Applications Requiring Dexron III?

Answer:
The new Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF will meet the requirements of Dexron III as the previous formula did. Feel confident to continue using Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. In the product description we recommend Mobil Dexron-VI ATF for GM vehicles manufactured in 2006 and later. For vehicles older than that, Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF is still a perfect fit.
I think it's safet to say that it will be JUST fine using a NON-DEX VI forumula for your transmission.
