C&D 2018 Lightening Lap Mustang PP2

https://www.caranddriver.com/feature...tning-lap-2018

2018 PP2 2:53.8

"But with no differential cooler, the rear axle overheated every time we took the Mustang out, often in as few as three hot laps, and even with easy laps staggered between them"

2017 1LE
https://www.caranddriver.com/feature...p-2016-feature

2017 1LE 2:54.8

"The new Camaro behaves like the Z/28 we lapped two years ago, and most of its sector times are right on the heels of the Z/28’s, not to mention the cars in LL4 and LL5. It has the same supernatural grip and stability and the same super-accurate wheel control, but the 1LE isn’t as nervous as the Z/28"

I'm bummed that they chose the turbo 4 1LE instead of the SS 1LE.

They should have included the SS 1LE to compare against the Mustang PP2

I think its cool the the PP2 was able to put up a better time here than the 1LE. Disappointing that it overheated.

Competition Good, Some of Ford's choices like no coolers bad / thread lol

The 2018 Ford Mustang GT PP2's best lap at Laguna, 1:38.42, is just 0.65 second behind the Camaro's best but a whopping 2.64 seconds faster than the 1:41.06 of a 2012 Boss 302 Laguna Seca edition.

...

When asked how the Mustang GT PP2 compares to the Camaro SS 1LE, Randy quickly replied, "It's not balanced like that damn Camaro. It's still not there, but it could be. Just a little tweaky-tweak." Besides the difference in the outright lap times, which were close, the Mustang's twitchy entry attitude and its pesky stability control system were no match for the composure and confidence supplied by the Camaro SS 1LE—even on a street tire. Can you imagine what the Camaro would do on a Pilot Sport Cup 2? This round goes to the Camaro.

it's nice but the PP2 makes the mustang at least $5k more than the 1SS 1LE. Not worth the 1 sec more.

They only test new models or significant changes

The base price of a PP2 Mustang GT is $44,850. 1SS 1LE is $44,995.

Add options like Recaros and dual mode exhaust like the SS has and you're at $47,340 for the Mustang.

Tires were the difference. The Mustang PP2 has Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.

If it were a 10 lap run the rear diff on the Mustang would have melted.

I’m just happy I don’t have to worry about my 1LE going into limp mode after a couple hot laps.

I’m tickled pink by this news.

In addition, Motor Trend just tested the Aston Martin Vantage around Laguna Seca and the SS 1LE is faster.

We are in a unique time period when it comes to cars and performance.

The rest of the world (America especially) has caught up to the "secret sauce" that the EURO cars have had for years, decades even. Any manufacture has the knowledge now to build a car that can compete in the handling/driving dymamics department.

The biggest difference now seems to be the driving experience, materials used, quality, and nameplate/prestige.

While the SS 1LE can match/beat the Aston Martin, if given the choice, where would you want to spend your time with performance being equal?

I'd rather be in a 991.2 GT3 manual.
