New Ride, Same Engine, Less Horsepower

Recently, I got a 2013 Chevy Traverse LT. It has the same 3.6L engine as my 2012 Camaro. Some differences are obviously tuning, exhaust systems, etc. There is also a noticeable difference! The Traverse has 281 HP while the Camaro has 323 HP. The Traverse gets on average 16-17 mpg while my Camaro gets 19-22 mpg. Interesting huh? Camaro gets 42 more horsepower and better mpg due to aerodynamics and weight. They are both fun to drive. I just thought to share this info with everyone.

Congrats on the new ride.
But I would think the Traverse weights more...... maybe that's what also hurting the gas mileage.

That's odd..the 2013 Equinox has the 3.6L engine and it's rated for I believe 300hp give or take a few more HP and it's alot smaller then the Traverse

Aerodynamics, weight, intake, exhaust, tune, and gearing will all affect the power output/mileage of a powerplant used in different applications.

GM uses the LFX in a variety of cars other than the Camaro. Many make north of 300HP.

However, the Traverse is not one of them. It still uses the LLT, not the LFX that the 2012 Camaro uses.

You can put headers on the LLT, right? Go traverse, go!

Makes sense now. Why would they keep using the LLT if the LFX is more efficient?

This happens all the time with manufacturers. The LSA in the CTS-V is rated at 556hp, but in the ZL1, it's rated at 580 (some induction differences). The 5.7 Hemi has three different ratings. My wife's Grand Cherokee has 365hp, the Challenger gets 375hp and the Ram gets 395hp. Same engine, different tweaks here and there. Nothing new.

Also the design of the air intake sytem (aircleaner) makes a big difference. Look at the corvette vs Camaro w/the same LS3. Vette makes more power due to the straight shot air intake VS the 90* Camaro design.

IncrediblyX,

Congratulations on your 2013 Chevy Traverse LT. Plenty of power and a more refined interior with class-leading space for cargo and up to eight passengers! Great choice !
