The purpose is to ensure that you don't have anything in the trunk that might be high enough to interfere with the top when it's folded down, fitting into the trunk space. If the trunk shade isn't fully extended, it will prevent the top from folding down. It sounds as those the previous owner somehow disable the trunk shade limit, allowing you to put the top down without extending the trunk shade. The down side to doing this is that no matter how much stuff you cram in the trunk, it'' still let you retract the top. Bad news if the trunk is full and you put the top down. Be careful. |

@HDRDTD Thanks, I did read about that in the owners manual, and that shade is MIA...the schematic that Sliver showed me had a piece that LOOKS like the part that I found, I just need to get into the trunk with a flashlight and look to see...

I really doubt that is what it is. There is really very little contact being made there. The entire purpose of that strut retainer hat is to keep the strut from being pulled through. With my coilovers, mine are a good 1/2 inch suspended above the tower at all times when my car is on the ground.
Underneath the tower, you have the rubberized strut bushing that sits in a pocket. I just don't see how you could get that kind of heat on the tower the way our struts are installed.

It's actually a little snoty for me. Lots of pops on deceleration. With the new headers and cats it sounds like a beast when you get on it! I just could do with out the pops and crackles, it's a little ricer for me. I have a S-type on my Ram and love it.
