Removing the key from the key fob.

So I tried searching and didn't find any info.

Is this even possible without taking it to the dealer?

I bought a key fob with remote start that I want to use once I install the remote start module. I was hoping I could just remove the blade from my current fob and install it to the new one.

Thanks!

I think it's a programming issue. It's not the blade. It will open the car and get in the ignition, but it won't allow the car to start up unless it is programmed properly. I'd take it to the dealer.

If you bought the key fob used it won't work. It will have to be taken to a dealer to be reprogrammed to your car and most dealers want about $100 to do this.

A new key fob with remote start can be bought for $50 and you can reprogram these yourself. If you bought a new fob this is how you do it, like I said this process will not work on a used fob.

1) Put your old key in the ignition and turn to the "On" position
2) Now quickly remove the old key and put in the new key and turn to the "On" position. You only have a few seconds to do this.
3) Leave the new key in the "On" position until you see a message on the DIC saying "New key programmed"

I did not think you could disassemble the key from the fob without breaking something apart. I have a bad Fob at work and will try to disassemble it at work on Monday if that helps.

If its like the 2010 was you actually have the remote start module. The kit you get from GM just relocates it to the windshield then you have to get the dealer to activate it. They will probably do the fob and activate the remote module at the same time if you ask.

Yeah I don't think it's worth it man. I bought a new key for $35 and they cut it at the dealer. I got in a programmed it before I even drove off. Just buy a new one and follow the steps above. I got lucky and paid less for the whole install the most people pay for parts. It was a computer mess up on their end.

Good luck! You'll love the remote start.
