V8 maual tranny oil

Hey guys, I have tried to search and can't really find anything, so I am sorry if it has been talked about already.

What kind of oil is the V8 manual tranny, I am thinking of changing mine early just to flush it out and put in new for storage over the winter.

It doesnt really give a spec for it in my owners manual, just a GM part number. So I guess what I am asking is, what Kind of gear oil will it take and what are some good oils to go back in?

Thanks

i remember a thread on here about a complete teardown of a car that was being built into a racecar and they said the manual tranny fluid circuit was tied into the powersteering pump and cooler, so it is ATF, not actual gear oil. which is a lil weird but not uncommon. many transfercases in trucks uses ATF and some newer gen manuals are usign a specific MTL type lube in the 5w30 viscocity, not actual gear oil like 75w90.

that does not mean you cant change the fluid whenever you want too. they still have a drain and fill plug like any other manual trans., the auto cars have no dipstick for checking fluid level and are also filled for life, but i have changed the fluid in mine already.

Umm I did read in the manual....thank you. All it says is a GM part number which when I went to the dealer the have it in stock and all it says for description on the label is "manual transmission oil."

I was looking for what weight it was so that part didn't help.

Thanks to the others for the information and not just telling me I am on my own.

the trans fluid is dexron 3, here is the story:

when gm switched to dexron 6 auto trans fluid they did not do the testing to see if dexron 6 is backward compatable with all the older transfer cases and manual transmissions that they had previously used standard atf(dexron3)trans fluid in, so the came out with what they now call "manual trans fluid" that is still made to dexron 3 specs

if you buy it from gm it is now called "manual trans fluid", it is just dexron 3 re-packaged

To answer the original question.........the GM part #. Change it as often as you like BUT why would you replace it with an unknown.? And possibly void the warranty.

From the owners manual:

Manual Transmission (V8 Engine):

Manual Transmission Fluid (GM Part No. U.S. 88861800,
in Canada 88861801).
