ENGINE TEMPS AFTER OIL COOLER DELETE QUESTION?

I have a 2010 2SS/RS with only 12000 mi. on the clock that has a small oil leak where the oil cooler casting bolts to the block. I have tightened the two mounting bolts a little tighter, but the leak is still there. The car is out of the factory warranty so it is up to me to fix it or just put up with it.

I did confirm that it is leaking from the gasket & not the freeze plug in the end of the casting & that would be an easy fix just replacing the gasket, but I am now thinking of just removing the cooler & the coolant lines to it eliminating any future leaks.

My question is, after you removed the factory oil cooler are the engine oil temps staying close to where they need to be in the 210- 220 degree range for a daily driven car? Also, what tool did you use to remove the threaded fitting in the side of the block that you need to plug that is used for the coolant supply to the cooler?

Thanks SO MUCH in advance for your help.

All The Best

I removed mine about a month ago and my oil temps are exactly the same (just above 200 deg). I used some pliers to get the fitting out of the block. It was a little difficult to remove due to the tight space. I did a little write up on it a few weeks ago. I would say go for. I removed mine due to coolant leak at the said fitting you are referring too.

Does the oil heat up as quickly as it did before removing that cooler?

Unfortunately it does not for me. I was hoping it would but no such luck.

Thanks for the answer. Might not do this then unless mine starts to leak

I'm pretty sure that the oil temp gauge is not accurate. It is basically an estimate done by the computer based on rpms and speed not an actual temp reading. The temp displayed is estimated based on the stock system. So removing the oil cooler or adding an aftermarket one probably won't change what the factory gauge reads.

I thought that was true too. After a bit of research, the oil temp is integrated with the Oil level sensor. I have not got a firm answer from a true Camaro guru if this is true or not.

The factory piece is actually more of an oil heater than a cooler. Mine has been off for a year now.
The factory piece is designed to heat the oil up quickly for emissions purposes.

I would be interested in seeing a comparison to the stock gauge with an aftermarket gauge or a scan gauge.

If it is a calculated amount based on engine rpm and the cars speed then wouldn't deleting the stock cooler/warmer not cause a difference in the reading of the stock gauge?

Other cars don't even have factory oil coolers, the G8 for example.

So I guess technically it isn't even necessary for our cars is it? A good external cooler is good for those who run road courses but for daily drivers or those who do a few track days the stock cooler isn't necessary?

A BIG Thanks to ALL of you who have helped me with the comments & information regarding the oil cooler delete. Looks like mine is going to end up in a box in my garage.

It will also clean up some of the clutter on the drivers side of the engine!
