Whats an Allocation

Sorry of this is a double thread, i'm sure this has been asked before, i just cant find it. i keep hearing about how great getting an allocation is and i have no idea what it is.

chevrolet determines before each month how many units they can build and sell. they then attempt to sell all of the dealers those units (consensus). after the dealer agrees to purchase those units, the manufacturer "allocates" the units to the dealer on a weekly basis. hence the term allocation.

so basically a dealer buys a certain amount of lets say "blank" camaros then someone comes in and orders what they want then their order is applied to one of these "blanks" ??? is that right???
