Question Bad Throttle Body warranty question

I am looking for thoughts from the experts on the GM warranty & what it covers.

I took my 2011 SS A6 with 71K miles on it to my dealer (from which I purchased the car new in Aug 2010), after my CEL came on repeatedly. Due to an ice storm, they did not have power at the time (nor did I) But were able to connect to the car & check the codes.

the tech told me it had a code saying the throttle body had issues & after removing the air plenum, me modulated the butterfly valve as we both watched. At 30% setting, the butterfly "quivered". The service manager has given me a cost of approx $400 installed for the new part.

My question is, I am inside my 5 years & inside the 100K, shouldn't the power train warranty take care of this? & if the dealership does not honor this, but should, who do I contact to escalate?

Thanks!

often the powertrain warranty includes things that are lubricated... so internal parts and not so much accessories... but you should read the warranty in detail to be sure.

if it's just the TBI, it's very easy to replace. It's literally remove the intake hose, disconnect the wire, remove 4 screws and it's off. Just need new TBI and gasket. You can probably get the GM parts on Amazon shipped for less than $100.

I don't believe it's covered under the PT warranty. But as the above posted stated this is a job a 5y/o can do it for about $150.

I'm surprised they wouldn't cover it under warranty? Never actually read what was covered myself though.

As mentioned above, it's a very easy part to change yourself. It can be done in under 15 minutes if you've got all the tools ready. All that's needed is a flat blade screw driver, a ratchet w/ a 10mm socket(deep is best, also a 3" extension may help). Don't give that dealer the courtesy of bending you over for a 15 minute job.

You can get reman TB's for ~100-125 here and there, but I rarely see new GM tb's for much less than $150. I highly recommend the new GM option.

Read it again. It's 2/24K for the TB under federal emission warranty. But the 3/36K bumper to bumper is "broader coverage" thus it's only a 3/36K coverage on warranty. Stupid, but that's how I read it.

Again, it's a 15 minute swap out at worst, and my dog could likely do it if he had thumbs. Air intake tube removal, 4 bolts (10 mm head) and a wire clipped on and you're done. Easy peasy.

Brand new 125.06 shipped to your door with Amazon Prime membership. GM p/n 12605109. ACDelco p/n 217-3153. Either number gets you the same exact box/part.

Ebay- cheapest I found brand new is at $141.97

Keep in mind, if you buy a NEW throttle body over the counter from your dealer's parts department or places like gmpartsdirect.com, or other online GM parts departments, you generally get a 12 month/unlimited miles warranty on that part over the counter (see link below for a warranty reference chart). Some people don't realize that, but it's true. Keep your receipts. If it screws up in a year, you could get a replacement part at no cost minus any labor.

It shouldn't be covered under powertrain warranty but this gives you a perfect opportunity to buy a ported throttle body!

I was confused by the wording that is why I post the link.

Agreed. They make it confusing on purpose I believe. Heck, even the dealerships screw it up sometimes.

Unless I was reading it wrong, I was just pointing out on your link only those parts with an asterisk had anything more than the federal emission warranty period of 2/24 or 3/36 bumper to bumper whichever was "broader coverage" (their words). The throttle body doesn't have an asterisk, so it's max coverage is, confusingly, 3/36. Some were saying 8/80 which is not the case on the throttle body.

BBK has a nice little vid to show how easy it is to swap them out. Only with the GM unit, it already comes with a new throttle motor already installed so you can skip swapping that part.
