I'm trying to change my shifter assembly out. Does anybody have a step by step walkthrough?

Not sure what solutions have come up in this thread (too lazy to read it all ), but this happens to me once in awhile, and I found that all that is needed - for automatics, anyway - is to press the shifter button a few times while in park - after a few presses you'll hear a click in the steering column which is the solenoid holding in the key or something, so either the solenoid is sticking/faulty, or it just isn't getting the command to release/energize (i.e. problem with the shifter).

Exactly what I do to get my key released.

I took my car to the dealer and they replaced the shifter piece. I just hope they updated the part since there seems to be so many issues.

Thanks. I want to change mine out and hopefully that will fix my issue. I'm scared that one day I won't be able to take the key out. I'm trying to find a document on how you swap this out and if you have to go under the car or not.

Problem: Key Stuck in ignition switch.
Cause: driving mode solenoid not disengaging ignition key from tumbler in park mode.

Problem has been intermittent and getting worse over time.

After researching, this problem seams common is most GM vehicles.

Vehicle
2015 Camaro 2LT RS Automatic

Tools needed
7mm spin tight
Small flat head screw driver

Step 1, remove the 4 x 7mm screws located under the steering column.
Step 2, telescope all the way out and lower.
Step 3, remove the column top cover first.
Not all the way but just enough to separate from the lower half of the column cover.
Step 4, remove the 2 bottom covers. (2 half’s)
Remember how they came apart so you can reassemble them back together. Snaps together.
Step 5, located solenoid behind tumbler. See my pics.
Step 6, using the small flat head screwdriver, remove electrical connector from solenoid.
Pry from the back of the connector to release while pulling. May take several tries.
Step 7, reassemble column cover and your done.

So the fix is to disconnect the lock so it cant ger stuck? This does not throw any codes or alarms?

Occasionally having the same problem of not being able to remove the key, I've noticed that the sift linkage seems to be out of adjustment because the neutral position doesn't feel right. To me an out of adjustment shift linkage would fool the ignition lock into thinking the shifter is not all the way in park. Next oil change is coming up soon and will try adjusting the shift linkage while it's on the jacks. Will update with the results.

Get the car up in the air (all 4 tires so you can start it shift to drive and then back to park to simulate taking it for a drive dont have to do it long just enough to go through the cycles) remove the heat shield between the exhaust and the driveshaft. you should see the bottom of the linkage with a bolt on the bottom. the way I "adjusted" it is just small cases of trial and error. My linkage rod ended up needing just a very slight nudge towards the front of the car.
