I use a the smaller shop vac (3.5 gallon I think)...not that heavy duty construction one mentioned above. It works great and doesn't suck the heck out of the carpet. It's not a pain in the azz to move around and can fit in the car with no problems. The bigger shop vacs are too cumbersome in my opinion and the tubbing can sometimes mar your seats if you are not careful.
