Going circuit racing in my SS, any dashcam mounts for iPhones to recommend?

Hello all!

I was wondering if any of you have any recommendations for mounts for an iPhone 4 that would be compatible with the 2011 Camaro with the heads up display. I would love to be able to capture all the action including my RPM and speeds through the various turns.

I am doing the 1 day Jim Russell driving schools' 1 day performance lapping program.

http://www.jimrussell.com/en/schedules.cfm?cId=7

I have several digital cameras and video recorders including my iPhone with a Dashcam app. Ideally I could sandwich my iPhone 4 in between the dash cluster pods and I have tested it today with a Breffo spider that barely holds with the car at standstill, but the angle is perfect!

Is there anyone that has had any luck with a system or an idea that would avoid any taping of the phone directly to the dash? If I have to I will but I would rather a proper solution.

If I give up the need to have the HUD, I found this:

http://www.kensington.com/kensington...-iphone-4.aspx

Anyone have any cool ideas? I can assure you that I will have video after the event! I will probably also figure out a way to film from the rear package deck of the car as well to see how I looked while driving and see out the side windows as well.

tks,
eB

Used 75 Camaro = $3500
Rolling restoration over 10 years = $5000
$5 of gas burned in 10 seconds = Priceless!

check out RAM MOUNT, they have a few that are very solid..

use the mirror mount:

http://www.rammount.com/CatalogResul...5/Default.aspx

it says does not work with OnStar, disregard that, it means the old gen onstar that had the big fat box on the mirror mount, I have this exact one on my Camaro right now with no issues, in fact it actually helped to push the mirror a bit further down so I could adjust it better in the convertible.

and then attach the iphone mount to it:

this is a iphone 5 if yours is different, just rerun the wizard for your specific device:

http://www.rammount.com/CatalogResul...5/Default.aspx

as far as the HUD is concerned, if you are looking for a speed reading to show up, just download the Dashboard Cam app, it is an app that runs from the iphone and uses the GPS to record location and speed into a dashcam like recording.

it won't capture RPMs though however there are several ODBII to Bluetooth devices that are available for the iphone, to capture that data, if the phone is recording picture AND ODBII logging, should be pretty easy to run the two recording files on a PC and figure it all out via the time segments.

were there any cables from the mirror to the windshield because of the Onstar buttons etc? How did that go?

+1 on the RAM mount. I use one in my race car to run the Harry's Lap Timer app on my iPhone 4. Here are some pictures of how it mounts in my Camaro:

wow, thanks everyone! I will go look at those vids now and consider that RAM model for placement. It doesn't look like it obscures the view too-too much. I am curious about obscuring more area below the mirror, I must admit.

ok here is a quick video.. sorry about the overall quality I did it fast and one handed..

don't mind the hanging screw you see, yours will be flush.. I lost my OEM screw so that is a temporary one until I can get a replacement.

thanks for the replies and video!

wow, mr. incredible, that was, uh, incredible! Thanks for showing me 9us0 that install and with a single hand to boot! Awesome placement indeed. I like that even more than the extreme left of the windshield.

I wonder how much it obscures your overall view though, I saw that you could place the lens most anyways, I wonder if you could tuck it up behind the mirror a bit?

Thanks for taking the time to make/post that video, it really helped me out! I will most certainly post my vids of my track day which is not this week coming up but next week.

Tks again!

i have one other question, Mr. Incredible. What length was the double ball on your setup? A, B or C? It looks like B when I stop motion your video, so I wonder if I went for length C, would I be able to get my iPHone parked right up against the back of the mirror it I point the double ball extension fully forward towards the back of the mirror, do you see what I mean?

Well today I completed my Jim Russell's Performance driving Course 1 and it was an amazing experience! I didn't realize just how much potential the 5th Gen Camaro right out of the box! I have a bone stock 2011 SS/RS with a factory Hurst shifted manual tranny with stock tires. This car is capable of similar feats as cars twice the price! I was the "cheapest" car on the track at CDN $44,000, in pure stock form and I was not last I can tell you that for sure!

In the hands of a professional driver, my SS was hitting the 200 KM/hr (125 MPH) and after a days' training, I was managing upwards of 185 KM/hr (115 MPH) and this car can do it all day long...amazing.

Find attached some pictures from today with more than just Camaro porn as my lil Princess was in some excellent company today!

Posting more soon.
