The Demon and Don Garlits
Saw this article this morning. Good read on Big Daddy who was a favorite of mine growing up. Found it interesting they talk about him making multiple passes in the Demon but zero times. Sounds like Dodge didn't like the times and told R&T to withhold them. Thoughts?
"With every pass, the front end yawns farther from the ground, the rear tires bunch up more violently, full throttle comes on sooner. After a dozen runs, the car coasts into the staging area. “That’s as quick as you can get after it,” Don Garlits says, climbing out of the cockpit. “If I step on it any sooner, it spins.” Nobody is going to argue the point." http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-cult...ger-srt-demon/

Good PR for Dodge to reach out to a drag racing legend like Don

Agreed, but makes you wonder why they even bothered to have him drive a Demon. It's like building a track car, inviting Randy Pobst to hot lap at the Ring, then leaving off the time. Which is what makes me think Dodge banned them from sharing a time. The article would have been just fine without the Demon if that's what they were going for.

Great interview. Then again, everything Don Garlits does is great.

Best ever. The entire reason I got into drag racing and also why my first love is MOPARs. Remember folks. It doesn't matter what body is on that top fuel funny car or what manufacturer sponsor is on the side of a topfuel rail. They are all chrysler Hemis in basic design. Best motor every produced. Big Daddy was and is the brightest mind in dragracing ever. He runs MOPARs. Lol
Great article. Thanks for sharing. |

I love old Mopar, and it was because of him and Richard Petty.
