I heard about that on the news tonight. Another illustration of the effect of driving while talking on a phone vs talking with a real person, substitute driving with watching TV. And try and pay attention to the TV while keeping a conversation, see how well you do.

I can admit I can NOT have a conversation on the phone and watch TV.

That's not the same as driving though. Concentrating on dialogue and plot, as well as visuals, while holding a conversation can't be done. You WILL miss out on one or the other.

Concentrating on merely LOOKING at the road and surroundings for potential hazards while having a conversation is much easier.

My phone rings and my TV get's muted/paused.

According to cars.com Ford and Microsoft co-developed the "SYNC" voice recognition system and other automakers will be able to offer it on their cars after 18 months of exclusivity for Ford.

That sounds about right for the 5th gen rollout, so maybe we can have a retro-ish interior (small screen & few buttons) and still get bluetooth & iPod/Zune integration.

While I don't talk that often in my car, I do like the idea of bluetooth to make it easier.

Besides, it's law now in NJ that you can't hold the phone and drive. Not that that really stops me if I need to make a call. My calls rarely go over 2 or 3 minutes at most.

Its easy to do all of that. Teach your significant other how to shift for you. That way you can just say a gear and they can shift if need be

. My fiance has got damn good at shifting from the passenger seat while watching my clutch foot. I have told her forever if we move to Ireland/England she drives.
