hmmmmm the IPOD/Itunes can be setup to not use AAC. the only files you will have that are AAC are the ones you buy from itunes. which a 3rd party app can convert them to mp3 (granted you must first get rid of that annoying DRM crap). sooooo you can still use your ipod. just takes more work sometimes.

It does use aac which is an apple patented codec. You cant decode it unless you do it through itunes or pay apple for the rights (why ipod docking stations are soooo expensive).

SOOO the only way to play your ipod in the camaro would be through the aux port (cable from the ipod headset port to the aux port in the center console) OR to get an FM transmitter.

All this hassle is the main reason I don't own an ipod or use itunes, it is essentially a monopoly on the market. Its also why i will always buy cd's over buying music digitally, If I buy it I have the right to listen to it where and on what device I choose, NOT the distribution companies choice.

You just plug it in and the radio will allow you to navigate/play the mp3's.
if you get a USB powered hard drive (2.5 inch hard drive) you won't need external power.

That sounds great. I'll definitely get one of those when I get the Camaro.

My one question is can it withstand the temperatures that a car's interior can raise to? I don't always have the option of bringing something like that into work with me (I work in a state prison). I'd hate to have to leave it in the car and have it get fried. I'm assuming it couldn't stand up to the intense heat of a summer day.

Ok, I answered my own question with a little googling.

Min Operating Temperature 41 °F
Max Operating Temperature 104 °F

So on the hottest days it would have to come out. Likewise the absolutely coldest. I can deal with that.

That is also operating temp. It would probably be fine to be in that heat while not in use. Plus, those numbers already have safety margins built in.

why carry CD's when you can just carry a memory stick! It makes so much more sense. It'll happen...and this is what I was hoping for. As you might have read in the dealer manual, it said, a "usb port for downloading your mp3 songs." Downloaded to the vehicle itself. No more CD's....if they come up w/ a CD changer as an option, I'll opt OUT. NO thanks. Memory stick for me!
