What's your honest opinion of people in the south?
Do you, if you live outside of "the south," think that all southerners are racists who marry their sisters. Seriously though, what do you think about us? What is your perception of Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Louisiana, Georgia, and so on.

What about TX and SC? FL and NM? Why is the "south" only the south east? Are you referring to the Civil War "south"? Hell southern california is south?

I have traveled quite a bit and have vacationed in several southern states. I have also met and spoken with people from across the US. Most people I have met have been nice and friendly especially those from the south. In my travels I have found the term southern hospitality to be true.

Generally speaking, when we say SoCal, the typical backwoods stereotypes and Klan and what not don't pop into most people's minds.

Wen I go North to visit in laws in Michigan...they always are polite to me...but most are first to admit the accent and the overall slow and deliberate demeanor make them at ease. I can chat it up with anyone anytime...and get them to open up.

Being Southern is a proud thing for those that are. Yankees could never understand. The Yankee term isn't normally meant to be demeaning (well, sometimes- just depends), it's more of an identifier. It's kind of akin to saying "y'all ain't from around here, are ya?" Translation of "y'all" normally means just YOU. If you want to include more than one, usually it's "all y'all." Just sayin'.
Interestingly enough, when a Southerner goes North or moves there, nobody seems to give a rat's azz if they're from around there or not. They're more accepting. Southerners are generally friendly to all, but if you weren't born a true Southerner, you'll always have that "stigma" about you. No matter how long you have been transplanted. And for those Yankees that do move to the South and then have kids, don't expect them to be truly "born Southerners." If the cat had kittens in the oven, we don't call them biscuits. But what would talking about the South be if not for a joke or two?? Q. What's got 8 legs and 12 teeth? A. The night shift at a South Carolina Waffle House. And in Georgia, they passed a law recently that if you divorce, you still get to remain brother and sister.
