Because of the LT1 in the mid/late 90's...even the Cap/Imp SS was a formidable opponent on the streets. You didn't want to underestimate them.

I had a 91 Z/28 5.7L that I drove until 95. It is one of my favorite cars of all time. A Mustang was no match for it.
Once it had a cam and chip it killed everything. Even later Cobras, Nissan 300ZX twin-turbo, G4 f-bodies... Wonderful car

Your right.
My 88 GTA L98 was a 15.3 at 94 mph car stock. I got it down to 14.1 at 99 with bolt ons gave up and traded it for a 94TA GT. Mustangs ate me for breakfast in the GTA not so much in the 94 TA it ran 14.01 at 99 in about 2500 DA as my base line. Bolt ons and weight reduction got me to 13.2 at 104 before I did H/C blew it up and sold it The L98 and LT1 are dogs compared to the LS engines. JMHO My 2010 is faster stock.

BTW my ex boss was a retired GM engineer that started his own company.
His wisest words to me were that the L98 was the best truck engine that GM never put in a truck. Its true though the torque curve down low would have been amazing for towing.

Just for reference I owned and raced in order:
1994 Trans am/auto stock. Best 1/8th mile time was 8.97 at 77mph 1995 Trans am/auto stock. Best 1/8th mile time was 8.90 at 77mph 1990 L98 vette/M6 stock and later modified. Best time stock was 13.70s at 99mph. Light mods it went 13.30s at 104mph 1999 Trans Am/Stock M6. Best time was 13.20 at 106mph. 1996 LT4 vette/stock M6 Best time was 13.005 at 106mph. Later modded it went bottom 12s at 116mph. I've had my current SS to the track one time and ran a 13.30 at 108 or 109 mph best I remember. Stock.
