Diluting Concentrated products

I watched a video by ihaveacamaro, but still need some more explanation on this.I bought the nanoskin glide for the autoscrub and it says dilute 7:1 is that 7 parts glide to one part distilled water.I'm using a 500ml kwazar spray bottle for this.My previous method of diluting things was just to add a lot of product and a little water

Heres a breakdown I put together that might be helpful in understanding dilution ratios. Enjoy!

UNDERSTANDING 'PARTS' IN DILUTION
Parts are the term used for simplified dilution that also allow you to apply a dilution ratio regardless of the size of the container or mixture batch you are creating. In essence 'parts' are a simple way of measuring your chemical and your water without needing to do much complex math or use percentages for each mixture.

In the dilution 4:1 you are using 4 PARTS water and 1 PART chemical.

This simplified form allows you to dilute any product easily so long as you know the parts and the total amount you want to create.
HOW THE PARTS ADD UP
So now that you understand what parts are, lets get into the idea of total yield. The total yield is the amount of finished product you will create with a diluted mixture. This is very easy to understand as the sum of the parts equals the yield. Going back to our earlier example of 4:1 -

4 parts water and 1 part chemical equals a total yield of 5 (the sum of the parts)

If you were working with a dilution of 16:1 your total yield would be 17. If working with a dilution of 10:1 your total yield is 11. and so on.
BREAKING IT DOWN INTO OUNCES
If you were working with a nice even yield for your size container dilution is easy, for example a 15:1 dilution is a total yield of 16. In a 16oz bottle the ratios would work out very cleanly to 1 part = 1 oz and you don't have to much to think about, but rarely are dilutions exactly the same as the container you're working with or the batch you need. Because of this your highschool math skills will need to come into play.

BATCH / YIELD = OUNCES PER PART

Remember
BATCH = Size of your container, or the amount you wish to make in ounces
YIELD = Total number of parts in your dilution ratio

As an example, lets say you want to dilute a mixture of APC Concentrate at 16:1 and the spray bottle you're working with is 24oz when full.

24 ounces / 17 total parts = 1.411 ounces per part (rounded to the nearest thousandth)

This tells you that each part in your mixture is the equivalent of 1.411 ounces if you want to fill the full 24 ounce bottle. If you care to simplify from here simply round up to 1.5oz per part, meaning you would add 1.5oz of APC Concentrate to the bottle and fill the rest with water to achieve your desired dilution for a 24 ounce container.

If you prefer to be more specific you can plug your formula findings back into the original ratio to get more precise measurements-

16 parts x 1.411 ounces = 22.576 ounces of water
1 parts x 1.411 ounces = 1.411 ounces of chemical

22.576 ounces of water + 1.411 ounces of chemical = 23.978 ounces of mixed product, just short of our 24oz total since we rounded to the nearest thousandth.

And that is our daily lesson in 2nd grade math ratios.

Have you read some of the posts in this section?

There are a few guys here that I am pretty sure don't even read at a second grade level most of the time.

When the wind fairy flees from the toothbrush over the horizon on a jet ski we will all finally know that the mouse pad found its soul mate.

Just wipe it down with windex and a paper towel. Soft scrub if necessary.

Will a Brillo pad work? I ran out of paper towels.
