The latest reveal this morning tells us that the Demon will come with a TransBrake.

Courtesy of Allpar (Patrick Rall)

Quote:
The upcoming Mopar muscle car will be the first ever road-going car equipped with a TransBrake.
That’s right – the new Demon is going to come from the factory with a TransBrake built into the 8-speed automatic transmission, allowing it to get away from the line harder and more consistently than when launching strictly with the brakes.

What is a Transbrake?
When a driver launches the average automatic-transmission car at the drag strip, they pull into the staging beams, holding the brake pedal down with their left foot and easing into the throttle with their right foot to increase engine speed before the launch. This method has been used by most drag racers since the dawn of the automatic transmission, but it has its shortcomings.
The biggest issue is that as you add power to the rear wheels, you increase the chances of spinning the rear tires in place or of overpowering the front brakes, pushing the car through the staging beams with the front tires locked. This is especially true of high performance cars with skinny front tires, like the 2018 Challenger Demon, since those narrow front tires have such a small surface contact area on the ground.
Most racers get around this is by installing a transbrake, which essentially “traps” the engine power in the transmission so as they increase engine RPM, there is no power working to spin the rear wheels or push the front wheels with the brakes locked. When the transbrake is released, all of that power is instantly sent to the rear wheels and the car rockets out of the hole with far more force than launching with the ol’ two-foot method.
Demon TransBrake
The 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is the first car to come with a TransBrake from the factory, so when the driver pulls to the line, bringing the engine up to the desired launch RPM and keeping it there will be easier than it is with any other road car. With this system engaged, the Demon will launch at 2,350 rpm without touching the brakes, while increasing launch boost pressure by 105% and launch torque levels by 120%. This system provides Demon 40% more torque on launch than trying to launch the car with skinny front tires using only the brakes.
The Demon TransBrake works in conjunction with the Torque Reserve system which we detailed last week (some might prefer to call that a 2-step or anti-lag) as part of the Launch Control feature. When this system is activated, the driver holds down the left shift paddle on the steering wheel, engaging the TransBrake, locking the output shaft, and allowing the driver to increase engine RPM and boost while the car stays stationary – all without touching the brakes. When the driver is ready to launch, they let off of the shift paddle and all of the Demon’s power is sent to the rear wheels in roughly 150 milliseconds, which is quicker than the delivery in a car being launched with the two-foot method, for improved track times in every metric.
The problem with an old-school transbrake is that when it is released, a tremendous amount of power is suddenly applied to critical drivetrain components. The Demon TransBrake has a unique preloading feature which applies a moderate amount of power to the drivetrain, but not enough to risk spinning the tires or moving the car. That helps protect the driveshaft, the rear differential and the axle shafts, but and also allows the power delivery to happen so quickly.

And again, they are flashing the 815 and 757 numbers... which is SUPER CLOSE in leading us to believe this will be the horsepower/torque!

All it takes is a curve to kill a Demon... This thing is going to be a nightmare on the strip!

I'm pretty excited to see it at the strip in action. My buddy has his finger on the trigger and is itching to get one of these in his collection. Good thing the inner city races are straight liners and freeway pulls.

This mornings reveal = race gas......

The amazing dual-PCM Demon

by Patrick Rall on Thursday, April 6, 2017

The final “teaser” video of the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon went live on IfYouKnowYouKnow.com and this week, we learn about some of the gadget in the Demon Trunk – including an powertrain control module (PCM) tuned to run on 100 octane race fuel and a new button panel for the interior with a High Octane Fuel button. We also learn that the Demon will have dual fuel pumps, larger fuel injectors and higher pressure fuel rails.

We have known for a few weeks now that the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon will come with a “Demon Crate”, including skinny front wheels and the tools needed to change the wheels at the track. The early information on the Demon Crate also mentioned that it will come with some Direct Connection Parts and today, we learn what some of those parts are.
The 2018 Demon will be the first ever production car designed to run on 100 octane racing fuel and this is possible thanks to the specially tuned Direct Connection Performance Parts Powertrain Control Module. The Demon comes with a PCM tuned to make monster power on “normal” premium unleaded fuel (91 octane), but the Demon Crate PCM will remap the engine parameters to make even more power on 100 octane unleaded racing fuel.
This high performance PCM works in conjunction with a new switch panel for the center stack of the Demon (shown above), adding a unique High Octane button with an indicator light. When you have the high performance PCM, and a tank full of 100 octane racing gas (or mostly 100 octane gas), pushing the High Octane button on the dash engages the racing gas tune – unlocking the full potential of the Demon’s supercharged Hemi.
Best of all, since the Demon has all of the knock sensor technology of every modern engine, the PCM can automatically adjust for lower octane fuel. Let’s say that your tank is full of 91 octane and you hit the High Octane button, the system can detect the low octane and the driver will be notified on the information screen that there is insufficient octane for the race gas button. Also, say that you top the tank off with 100 octane fuel, but you have too much 91 in the tank to maintain the needed octane levels – the system will also detect that and make the needed adjustments to protect the engine from the damaging effects of too much boost and too little octane.
Finally, regardless of what octane is pumping through the Demon’s fuel system, it will be arriving to the engine with greater flow than that of the Hellcat Challenger. The new track-ready muscle car will use two fuel pumps to maintain the needed flow, working with larger fuel injectors and a higher pressure fuel rail to feed this hungry beast.
Unfortunately, we still don’t get any power estimates, but today’s press release promises that “drag racers will see big changes in elapsed time (ET) with the high-octane fuel.”
This is the final teaser ahead of next week’s debut of the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon in New York City, so it seems as though we will head into the grand introduction without` knowing the power numbers or any of the track times – but based on what we have learned over the last 12 weeks, we can expect that the new Demon will be a remarkable machine.
Of course, Allpar will be in attendance for the Demon debut in New York City and you can be sure to find the most comprehensive coverage of the newest supercharged Dodge Challenger right here – with updates during the course of the debut event on Tuesday night.

So... the Demon crate comes with another PCM module that is not street legal? A crate with factory parts and tune you would otherwise have gotten from the aftermarket?

In order to comply with the EPA regs, I would guess that is why a separate PCM is needed.

It will be interesting to see what warranty applies when the crate is bolted on for off road only use

They can come out with as many sub models as they want, its still the same car since 2008. Not too mention, the demon has already met its match even before its release. I'll take the exorcist

Why not? Is it something you heard, or did you actually have a bad experience with them?
