Vented oil cap on 1LE?
Just a random question. I just bought a 2015 1LE Camaro and it has a vented 3 piece oil cap with a plastic hose coming off the intake tube. My wife has a 14' SS that doesn't have it. The car was from New York with emissions from that area on the window sticker. Is that an emissions deal from those areas?

Not an emissions thing. It’ll like an oil separator. It is good to have came on 1le cars. Non 1le didn’t come with it

Yep, it's what Scooter said. Its the 1LE clean Side Separator. I bought an OEM one from someone on here last year for my SS to work with my catch can/PCV system. Even if you decide to remove it one day I would still hang onto it. 20+ years from now those things will likely be hard to come by.

Yes hang onto that if you don’t like it. Personally I bought an elite engineering one for my car. It’s not a bad thing to have

Are these needed on a L99?

I don’t know if the term needed is accurate for any motor. They separate oil from the clean side of your system and put it back into your oil system. Which is why it replaces your oil fill cap. I would say it’s a matter of opinion if it’s needed but your motor l99 or ls3 will function just fine without it. Myself I have one on my motor as it can’t hurt to keep your PCv system cleaner. There is thread about this you can find in searches. But if memory serves me correct the clean side separator we are discussing here has minimal effect except in wide open throttle situations. An actual catch can has great effect on the system and would suggest everyone install one.

Catch can has been installed since the day I purchased her. Granted I am the second owner but she only had 50K on her when I got her. Pulled off the hose running to the intake tube and nothing there. Cotton swabbed the inside of the hose also and zip. Guess it would be safe to say I wouldn't need to put one of these on then correct?

Only if you road course track day it.
The 1LE separator is different from a catch can. The 1LE piece is intended for road course... long left hand sweepers at high RPM. Under those conditions you can get a lot of oil up in the valve covers and in a left hand sweeper g-forces it can put that liquid oil into the pcv... then up into the intake. That 1LE separator puts that pcv hose up much higher away from liquid oil in the valve cover in those road course track conditions. A catch can is for - all driving conditions. Helps keep oil out of the intake. Every car in theory can benefit from one of those. It's closed loop, changes no paths of the pcv system, just puts in a nice separator tank to keep the oil droplets from going into the intake. A good thing for both port or direct injection. Just my opinion.... catch can - great for any performance car..... clean side oil separator like the 1LE piece - also add that on road course days. |
