A nonlicensee may not transfer a firearm to a non-licensed resident of another State. A nonlicensee may mail a shotgun or rifle to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. The Postal Service recommends that long guns be sent by registered mail and that no marking of any kind which would indicate the nature of the contents be placed on the outside of any parcel containing firearms. Handguns are not mailable. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun.

As far as a box, hit up some gun stores for a box. Wrap that box in brown paper and tape the crap out of it. Wrap it twice. Or go to a store that sells boxes and make one of your own by cutting boxes.

I just read this on their site. Make sure you read it as it states to include a magazine and to contact them for an RAN# and also contains the following:

We have implemented a new policy for all our customers. We will now provide you
with a prepaid shipping label to return your firearm.
Thanks for checking on this. I appreciate your help.

An FFL may mail a handgun via Priority USPS mail. It is FAR cheaper than the overnight BS through Fed-Ex or especially UPS. And the risk of theft is also FAR less through USPS.

I have shipped dozens of handguns using my friends FFL at local PO's. You fill out a Postal Service form they retain, showing shipped From and To. The PO keeps a copy of your FFL on file and that's it. I have even simply showed a current FFL and have shipped from a PO.

Then again...this IS Free Montana not one of the many gun phobic States. I'd stop in the local PO and talk to them before bringing in a gun in a box.

Years back my old Agency shipped almost all of our 5903 Smiths back to Springfield to get new sights and have frames checked for cracks, etc. The cost difference had we shipped UPS or Postal Service...Was literally $10K. UPS can run $60 on up per gun. US Postal Service was $12 at that time. And they allowed us to do boxes of several...UPS would not at that time.

USPS is way cheaper and secure.

Contact a local FFL. They will probably have boxes left that you could use or buy off them.

PHXLLT1,

You are shipping a firearm back to the original manufacturer, for warrantee service or repair. That was allowed I know a few years back, haven't checked lately.

I'd break the AK down, to fit a smaller box.

It is what it is, I'm afraid.

I've lived here too long to remember what it might have been like in the other two states that I've lived in. Be 40 years this coming October since we moved into this house.

Wish y'all could vote out the anti-2A globalist Marxists there and restore your rights, but doubt that'll ever happen since your outnumbered by ignorant people who hate the US Constitution and think socialism and communism is a new fix for every problem.
