What is the "maximum" scratch you can fix with polishing?
The dealer where I bought my car "washed" with brushes to keep the cars "clean". Because of this I have a few scratches in my hood that are deeper than the "spider web" scratches I'd be comfortable polishing out myself.
What is the safe scratch limit for a novice to polish away? Any photo samples of the "limit" would be appreciated. Besides a repaint, are there any options in between polishing and a repaint? I'm thinking a body shop's stock answer will be "repaint".

Depending on how deep they are, you could try wetsanding. If I were you, I'd try getting some meguires m101 and try polishing it out. If m101 can't get it, then you could try wetsanding or a repaint.

Not an exact science, but the general rule of thumb is if you drag your fingernail gently across the scratch and it catches, you might have a scratch thats going to require a little more than polishing.
If you can't feel it or your nail doesn't catch its likely going to be pretty easy to polish out. |

Unless they were using a soapy rake to wash your car with, I would think you could polish brush marks away.
