Keep the Chevelle and wait until you can afford both. You will regret it selling it.

Do what I did....keep the Chevelle and opt for a lower trim level Camaro instead of a ZL-1. I chose to go with a V6 Camaro since it is a year-round driver. If you can swing an SS and keep the Chevelle then go for it.
I would trade my Chevelle for a 1st gen Monte Carlo (1972 was my first car), but never for a 5th gen Camaro!

Your '70 Chevelle SS looks great, but...
...like someone else said - it's not a super desireable LS6 (or even an LS5) 454. ...and it's an automatic trans - not the more desireable Muncie 4-speed manual. You've already admitted that your 396 Camaro SS is the car to which you are more emotionally attached. But all that said, if the Chevelle is an L78 (375hp 396) then I'd keep it no matter what. If it's just a 325hp or 350hp 396, then sell it for as much as you can and move up to a gen5 Camaro ZL1. Your 396 Camaro SS and a new ZL1 would be a top notch pair to own! |

I owned a black/black 70 SS396 4 Speed. I loved the car but traded it for my first Corvette which led to a lot of other Corvettes. The 70 Chevelle is powerful but it is not a ZL1. The SS simply does not have the handling, braking and finesse of the ZL1. But it does have history and appreciating value. It's value will most likely double in the next ten years. The ZL1 will still be depreciating. If there was a way to negotiate with the wife to convince her of its value and you have a place to keep it inside, try to keep the SS. Don't get me wrong, I know that the ZL1 has over 40 years of technology and the best parts that any car can have without any squeaks, moans or rattles. My 67 Vette as a lot of nostalgia and draws a lot of attention but it does not have the power, brakes and handling of the ZL1. Tracking the ZL1 shows me how good this car really is. There is a place in my life for both cars but the ZL1 always puts a smile on my face. Another alternative might be the 1LE, great handling at a much lower price point and Recaros in 2014. I hope you are able to get and keep both cars. Good Luck.

If you have another youth car (your '69 Camaro) then it might not be as bad and I would probably consider the ZL1. If it was your only muscle car I would say HELL NO!
I can't tell you the number of times people come up to me in my '69 that say I had, brother or dad that had, or I should've never gotten rid of that car. I will say that even though mine isn't a ZL1, I love having both new and old muscle car. ZL1 would just be even more over the top. I hope to be able to afford one some day but never at the cost of me getting rid of my '69 (which I've had mine since I was 16).

In terms of value, keep the Chevelle. A restored numbers-matching SS is far more valuable than a ZL1. The Chevelle will just keep appreciating in value. The ZL1 will appreciate in value eventually too but that is YEARS away.
If you're looking for a fun car that could be used for daily driver duties (and be reliable), the ZL1 is the obvious choice. It sounds like you have cars being used for daily drivers already so I'd KEEP THE CHEVELLE.

The ZL1 will never ever be as valuable as that Chevelle. These 5th gen camaros will never appreciate in value the way that car will. There's simply no comparison between an original muscle car and a newer car of any kind. Those things were built like a tank compared to modern cars.

Your choise, but i would not do it
First you have a all time beautiful car.Few are left that look this good.On the other hand remember when the 5th gen first came out high demand and people paying over msrp.same thing with the ZL1 first year demand was high with only apox 1900 ZLs made.second year around 8000 zls are made with Some selling under msrp and 2012 selling for around $48000.now the Z-28 is coming out and then the 6th gen.my 2011 ss which i paid 3000 under msrp dropped in value 7500 first year.the same with my ZL.i love my car but you have a one of a kind the will only go up in value.
