How many of you have had wheel bearings noisy or go bad?

I replaced my rear ones at 140,674 miles. You can hear them growl when they go
bad. It was the Rear right that was making noise, but I do both. They're relatively easy to replace. I did the fronts at 149,337 miles, smoothed the ride considerably. They were not making noise yet, but a little wobbly. When bearings wear to the point where they wobble, it can warp the rotors gradually as you brake. I did not have to take anything apart to do the rears. Just push the axles in so the bolts clear. You may need some heat to separate the bearing from the socket. Hammer the hub disc from the back, then front, then back, till you see it start to come out of the socket. Then you can pry bar it out, or keep hammering back and forth. Optimally, you use this tool: Bolt that to the hub, and hammer on it downward, then rotate it clockwise: Turn 45 degrees, hammer <-- Turn 45 degrees, hammer ^ Turn 45 degrees, hammer --> Turn 45 degrees, hammer down, and continue till it pops out. I never used one, I was always able to hammer the hub from behind and front repeatedly till it popped out. Last edited by '10CamaroDude; 05-27-2020 at 06:12 PM. |

My driver side rear went out at 60k. Made a roaring sound. It wasn’t difficult to change, no special tools. You are supposed to replace caliper bolts but I ended up re-using the old ones with locktite because I ordered the wrong ones.

I have never replaced any of these bolts, and I have never had an issue.
You can re-use torque to yield bolts three times, except HEAD to BLOCK bolts. That is because they will bottom out in the block before clamping down when they're stretched. These are going into open threaded holes, so there is no bottoming out anywhere. Torque to yield, is any fastener that specifies a turning degrees, after torquing. If all you have is a torque value, you can reuse it over and over again. |

Thanks for the info, my noise is not wheel bearings at this time. Its tire noise, LOUD tire noise. Driving in the rain its fairly quiet but on a hot dry day wow the tires get insanely noisy.
