Transmission cooler mounting
When you mounted yours did you have the lines and fittings facing down or up? I have seen plenty of pictures of both and about to do mine so was just wondering if there is any benefit to either decision.

That’s what I’m thinking since the lines are already down at the bottom why not just go straight from there. Thanks

You go, to the rad, then from the rad to the cooler, then to the transmission. SO, you
will leave the line going to the rad alone. You pull the FROM rad line, that goes back to the trans. Then, from that rad fitting, to the cooler, then from the cooler to the return line. You can mount the cooler with the fittings horizontal, you will put the return line on the top fitting. This is just the rad with the trans cooler on the side, the Camaro is bottom. If sideways, the RETURN line goes to the top fitting. You really don't want fluid to drain back. Since, you may need to add some so it's where it needs to be, the drain back will over fill the pan, and may come out the side fill/vent plug. Same if you mount it with the fittings facing DOWN. All that fluid can drain back into the pan. Face them UP, or sideways and RETURN line up top. I recently changed the fluid, and I put 7 quarts in, and it came out the fill hole. It calls for 6.7 quarts with a pan drop and filter change. Just a heads up, if you add fluid after putting the cooler on, it may over-flow out; since you add fluid with the engine running with the drain level plug out... |

Thanks that’s a very interesting reason to mount the fittings up or horizontally. I will be doing a jre dipstick to mine and should arrive today just to make it easier to get the level correct.

The JRE dipstick is a great add on. With my trans cooler, I bypassed the factory cooler in the radiator.

I have seen many do that and it has its advantages and disadvantages. So does going through the rad first lol. I’m gonna keep it through the rad first as a personal preference , neither is right or wrong.

Going through the rad first, stabilizes the fluid temps. With just the cooler, you would
have drastic temperature fluctuations. The majority of transmission coolers are supplemental (AUX), meaning they are designed to aid the radiator in cooling the vehicle's transmission fluid. Basically: Through the radiator cooler for faster warm ups and consistent trans temp, and then through an external cooler to make sure fluid going back back that is a little cooler than the engine in case the engine runs hot. The one on my former Charger was a stand-alone, and I could watch the temperature fluctuate when coasting. Optimal trans fluid temperature should be below 175-f. 180 to the upper 190s isn't too bad, but it should remain at a good 180 and lower. Neither one is wrong, and based on climate too, I suppose. If you don't have winters, then just a good external cooler is good. If you do have winters, you need the temperature to get up quicker. Too cold temps for the trans is also not good for it, but I would rather have that than too hot. |

I installed a thermostat inline with my cooler and didn't run it through the radiator I just have to take it easy the first few miles to allow it to warm up.
I went with the thought that adding it inline with the radiator was more than the transmission pump was designed to handle. Don't know how true that is, but either scheme seems to work. |
