2010 Camaro/16 year old son...help!
hi, my 16 year old son desperately wants a 2010 Camaro LS. It has been his dream for a few years. He was worked hard, gotten good grades and has earned the privilege. But then....we went on the test drive and the power and magnitude of speed/acceleration scared the daylights out of me. I cannot put him behind the wheel of such a forceful machine. He has no idea about horsepower and I'm certain lacks a healthy respect for such. Does anyone know about speed limiters available. Do they even exist? Is that even a possible solution to this dilemma. I've been told about Superchips, Predator, or Diablo to look into to determine if we can put a cap on the speeds, or in any way limited the acceleration and speed potential of the car..... I'm really out of my element here. Any words of wisdom would be very much appreciated.

Thanks for the quick reply. The V6 would be the one he would get. That's still WAAAAAY too fast. Any other suggestions would be welcome.

I would suggest a cheap used car to hold him over for two years. If the good grades and attitude hold up a new or slightly used Camaro would be a nice graduation present. Resist the urge to give in. He needs to develop driving skills and driving sense. You don't have to get him a Prius but the new V6 Camaro is a powerful machine as you said.

Factory speed limiter is set at 145
You can also set a high speed warning. Which make a sound if you go over a certain speed. Of course he would figure out how to get rid of it. The Camaro is over all a pretty safe car. But if you don't trust your kid to be safe and to be a good driver, then maybe you shouldn't be considering this car yet. Get him a cheap reliable car for now and wait until you are sure he will treat the car with respect and won't do anything stupid to hurt himself or others. |

congratulations on your car...and that's a great approach by your parents. If I do end up letting him get it, I will do the exact same thing.
Be safe and thanks. |

PRIUS, oh wait..they can be just as dangerous..
SMART car perhaps? ..also consider insurance rates, a 4 door sedan/coupe would be a good start. Last edited by 2010SLVRBULIT; 03-09-2010 at 07:30 PM. |

As a young car enthusiast.... my first car was a 120hp Honda Civic. When I was done with it, it was closer to 200hp, and I got into my share of trouble with it. Thats when I was 16 as well. If I was in a 304hp car (such as the Camaro), I know I would not have handled it right. Your first car is a real learning experience, as to what a car (and you as a driver) can and cannot do. As much as I would love to see your son happy with a car as cool as the Camaro, I would equally hate to see such a car (or your son) damaged from inexperience.
To answer your questions however, there are a variety of aftermarket systems that you can have installed to monitor your son. You can limit speeds, and even be instantly notified when he has reached a certain speed, or undesired locations. However all of this is not cheap, and you will spend a few thousand (plus the cost of the car) to get your desired result. Not to mention, you will void most of your warranty for your electronics, as the system would need to be re-wired. I would suggest getting your son a cool and decent starter car, and not a new 2010 Camaro. As I said earlier, first cars always get abused, and I would hate to see anything happen to your son or the Camaro. He has his whole life ahead of him for fast cars.... but you gotta work your way up. Best of luck!
