RP-5168 K&N UNIVERSAL AIR FILTER

Does anyone know if the RP-5168 K&N UNIVERSAL AIR FILTER fits our Z28?

Why not buy an OEM unit? They say Z/28 on them.

Agreed, and I can't imagine a universal K&N being any cheaper than the factory unit.

Because this filter is the same one sold with this K & N PERFORMANCE AIR INTAKE SYSTEM: https://www.knfilters.com/cold-air-i...-intake-system

The whole system is supposed to deliver 20 hp more power than the OEM system. I think the most authoritative in this whole system is the filter, which gives you more power.

Would you not agree with that?

To answer your original question...maybe? Our factory filters have a funky clamp, which makes for a funky mount. So, maybe?

To the above, no not really. The filter off that kit and the filter off our car are essentially thr same, mounting aside. You’ll pick up roughly 0.00 HP. And no, a good amount of power actually is from the tube inlet being smooth, not having silencers in it.

K&N ALWAYS advertises that they get more HP; in reality, I don't think I've ever heard of a case where they *actually* do. I know everytime I've used them, I've gained nothing but noise and lost gas mileage.

Now, if they’ll sell you just the tube....then by all means. Thats probably worth a couple HP.

I've heard the oil on those filters will mess with the MAF sensor IDK never tried one on mine but you might check into that.

No they will not. I've already did my research and tried. With OEM filter they have a funky clip that will only fit with OEM. With K&N, you'll have to change out the plastic tube fitting or create a notch top and bottom to fit the OEM plastic tube fitting. If you do go with K&N, check the diameter of the filter...I think the K&N is bigger than OEM filter. My understanding is Z/28 OEM filters are made by K&N, I could be wrong, but I heard it somewhere.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Thank you for your answers and opinions.
I've found a video from a German tuner on youtube - JP Performance - where a Camaro gen. 6 was tested on a dynamometer before and after installation of such a performance kit by K&N. In fact, the Camaro has LOST in performance, about 10 HP - as you have written. I think I'll keep my hands off and stay with the OEM filter.

Here is the video: https://youtu.be/yyyq0cxLdWQ

sehr interessantes Video. ich danke Ihnen für das Teilen

What part of Germany do you live. I use to have a German friend who lived in Karlsruhe who had a 1989 black IROC-Z. He had a bike shop called Reiner.
I use to live in Karlsruhe, well I was stationed there. He and I both had the same Z with same black color. Good times in Germany. No speed limits on freeway!
