I'm reading this stuff but I am not understanding it. swap my car's rear for better gears? because it'll go faster?
I dunno, it's a good thing I don't race lol

Gears generally provide you with better torque.

3.73 is probably the best way to go for 1/4mi. 3.91 just runs outta jazz by the end of the strip. At C5Fest I lost to a V6 with 3.27 even though I pulled on him all the way to the 1/8 mile mark, after that I was admiring his vanity plate.

3.91's in a M6 (especially in a SC application) would make things interesting... much less make first gear useless at least for me. Great mod for the A6's despite the $ cost.

Brake Lines and fluids are ordered.

Oh I agree there, but if I were to do any racing it would be auto cross and they wouldn't be that bad there. 3.91s are one of the mods I would love to do just don't think it will happen.

More like giving the illusion of adding torque since you don't gain any but it certainly feels that way.

To the bold

Yeah we will be only doing straight line racing. I'm a girl and get confused with turns and such.

That's a tough question... I haven't done much research yet, but I can't recall seeing anyone that's ever broken an a6 v6 axle? I think most people swap rear ends because "they think they have to", or because they want to run a 3.73, or 3.91 gear... It's quite a bit of work to swap out the rear end, not to mention expensive to swap out all of the parts. Rough guess, $1200-1800 bucks not counting labor if you can't do it yourself.

You can probably swap posi/locker guts into your current carrier while it's still in the car if I can come up with something. For about 1/3 the cost of a rear end swap or less.

The Auto, and lack of bottom end torque the v6 has would probably be pretty easy on parts. I question weather a diff swap is really necessary, unless you're just doing it for the ratio selection or you have north of 400hp to the wheels.
In talking with HDRS, I know he broke an axle but he said it was from being greedy. Doing a brake stand at 3k rpms with a 150 shot and on slicks. That's the only case I've heard of a v6 auto rear breaking

I saw your post about this and is it because switching into 4th gear kills you at the strip? I'd love to swap in gears but if 3.91 falls flat at the end then 3.73 is the highest I'd like to go

Yeah it's pretty sobering to find out the badass mod you did doesn't equate to much at the strip. I'm really considering a re-install of the Zex kit. I think if I ran a 100 shot when I hit 3rd gear I'd be getting 12's. You're making a smart call with 3.73, and you'll still feel a good difference with that swap.
3.91 is so much fun though. So, so much fun.

What exactly did he brake? Last thing I'm worried about breaking in my car is anything in the rear end honestly. There is a member in my group that is running 700+HP to the fly and has yet to tear anything up.

Since I'm a manual we have the same shafts and diff until he swapped out to 3.91s
