My ZL1 just got paint correction, protective film and coated

I started a thread over in the Cosmetic Maintenance -Wash, Wax, Detailing section discussing the detailing project I'm having done to my ZL1.

For those of you who don't spend a whole lot of time in the Cosmetic Maintenance section, I thought I'd post the thread link here and the link to the photos taken by the detailer.

If the photos are any indication, I can't wait to see the car in person. Enjoy!

I ordered my Zl1 this weekend in the nightfall gray but really wanted the black. Everybody told me I would be sorry with the black but these cars look so mean in black! I can still change the color. My question is does the process and film make taking care of a black car easier mad more manageable? I don't want to be a slave to the color.

Did you have them clear bra the side skirts? That's an area that will get scratched while getting out. I'm definitely going to get them done.

I went with the film more for chip prevention. My concern is rock chips sticking out like a "sore thumb" on a black finish. The film has a self-healing property. I'm hoping the self-healing makes managing the finish a little easier. We'll see on that one. The two layers of ceramic coating should also help.

I did not order my car. Had I ordered it, I would have not picked black. With that said, I agree with you that black just plain looks bad ass on the ZL1. So much so that I'm willing to put up with the headaches associated with caring for a black finish.

Yes, I had the side skirts covered for the exact reason you site.

I have added some input to your thread in the detailing section. Good choice of products and excellent detail shop!

So here's an interesting question...Is no one choosing the paint protection package offered when ordering the car? What are the major concerns with going that route? I haven't seen anybody mention it.

I was actually planning on trying it, but my dealer informed me that it doesn't come on the car. It is installed after the car is delivered to the dealer and the price doesn't include installation, so I'm just going to do it, or have it done myself after I get the car.

It will be applied at the dealer after they scratch it all up for you. Also you don't get to pick the installer. I like others prefer to have the paint correction done and then put the clearbra on for the best results. I don't know how well my dealer cleans the cars at delivery yet either. The last time on my 2012 ZL1 at another dealer was actually clay bared while they washed it. So you have to consider all of that.

As 17CamaroZL1 and KLR ZL1 point out, The film is not applied at the factory. It is put on at the dealer which usually means the application is farmed out to a 3rd party.

The protection film can also be ordered after vehicle delivery as an accessory. I inquired about it with my dealer and they were pretty clueless as to where and who would apply it. Everything I read says the installer is more critical than the brand of film.

I decided it was worth paying the extra money to have a shop experienced with paint film protection do the application. The old adage that you get what you pay for.

A couple of reasons. The first it is often more of a scam add on. The dealer does a quick prep, usually adding even more swirls, then covers that with a sealant, and proceedes to say you will not need to wax the car ever again, or for a few years. They spend about 50 bucks on your 600 dollar "investment". They may also require you to return every so often for a reapplication, where once again your paint is at risk of even more damage. Keep in mind the detailing shop at the dealership is all about low wages and high volume. Usually they fail to even properly wash a car. They get away with it because most people don't pay close enough attention, or check the paint in different lighting.
Again this is most dealers not everyone if them.

Then there are the ones who send it out to the pro's and them mark it up above what you would pay to take it there yourself.

Its best to take delivery without any prep, and deal with it yourself. Just take a look at the cars with hammered paint on the showroom floor.
