Finally a cool day...What a difference!
It's been a very hot and humid summer here in PA (I know you southern folks feel bad for us ) but today it was 80* with very low humidity. Took the car out for a cruise and WOW, it felt like it picked up 100 HP! Got me thinking...how much power does the hot, humid weather rob from our cars? Mine is basically stock with a cold air intake and oil separator.
Just for jokes when I got back from my ride in the ZL1 I took my Chevelle (naturally aspirated 454, th400, 4:11 gears) out for a quick spin for a comparison. Even with the Hoosier Quick Time tires I couldn't get it to completely hook and there was a ton of traffic so after wasting a 1/4 tank of gas I headed back home. The Chevelle definitely picked up some power with the cooler weather but not the huge gain I felt in the ZL1 which begs the question...are artificially aspirated engines affected much greater by temperature and humidity than naturally aspirated engines? Needless to say I had a great day playing with my toys! |

Sounds like you did have a fun day! What year is your Chevelle? I have a brother in law who is building a 67 SS now and he hopes to have it done by march of next year. I like 67-69-70 year models the best but they are all cool though. To answer your question I do not know if one or the other matters because I watch a lot of drag racing and they all say if they have good air the cars will run better times. So I am thinking both will run better with good air and that means cooler air or drier air.

My Chevelle is a '70 Malibu. It came from the factory with a low compression 350, th350 and an open end rear with 2.73 gears. It's come a long way but still could use some TLC, I consider it a driver, not a show car by any means.

Thanks. I get a lot of compliments when out for a ride. Unfortunately I also get approached by a lot of weirdos, especially when at a gas station. I must admit I like that the ZL1 doesn't attract the unwanted attention like the Chevelle does but I do get constantly tailgated in both cars .

My 18 year old son bought a 2003 Mustang convertible as his first car last summer and same thing - always has someone pushing him from behind. Do people with ‘normal’ cars feel like fast or fast-looking cars should always be speeding? Or are they just haters? I don’t get it but it’s a real thing for sure because it doesn’t happen to me in my daily.

More air = more HP
Oh yea.....the 427 69 HATES heat & humidity. The better the air and adjusted altitude makes all the difference in the world. After all, an engine is just an “air pump”. The more air, the more horsepower; thus, a supercharger.

Even a supercharged car feels better in the cold, maybe even more so.

I know I saw about 50rwhp difference between a 50-degree day with a cool car, and a 95-degree day with a heat-soaked car. Different dynos, but both Dynojet.

Another annoying thing...I live on a busy street and when I'm working on or washing one of the cars in the driveway, the import and mustang guys rev up their engines when they drive by. I just laugh to myself and keep on working. Oddly enough I don't get this from the Dodge, Chevy or classic car guys. |
