Rear Bumper Damage

Was rear-ended recently. The body shop's initial estimate says the rear bumper cover needs to be replaced, and paint blending on the quarter panels needs to be done to do the job right. The insurance company says the bumper cover can be repaired and blending of the quarter panels is not necessary. Any thoughts.

Looks like the cover needs to be replaced, because it is distorted. I wouldn't think that they should need to blend.

The only way to "repair" polyurethane plastic is to sand it down and fill the imperfections with bondo / body fillers. This in time will crack on a plastic surface because plastic is not rigid like steel. IMO the bumper has to be replaced.

Blending is always necessary when you have a pearl or metallic paint job, especially if the clear coat has a tint in it. Matching the colors on metallic paints is very difficult for any body shop. If they only paint the bumper without blending your bumper will probably be a noticeably different color than the trunk lid and quarter panels. Its just the nature of the beast when your dealing with metallic or pearl colors.

The bumper cover (facia) needs to be replaced. Shops like to blend the 1/4 panels as they usually can't match the factory paint exactly. Don't allow it- If they can't match the factory paint get another shop who guarantees they can. Don't ruin your factory paint on your 1/4 panels.
