oil cooler

I now have the cooler, sorry no pics yet. thx to x25 and 12-motorsports for the legwork and installation tips
http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=383352

I went with an external cooler because:
1) the builder said that he had seen "a few" stock heat exchangers fail and water got in the oil. that scared me.
2) I really want this one to last, so cooler oil and well monitored temps are critical on the track in TX heat
3) not really part of the cooler, but I wanted a oil temp gauge that read directly

I got the 212F thermostat/adapter and a 2 step smaller cooler than x25 got. his cooler is MASSIVE!

since the car is a true DD, I needed the thermostat to allow the oil to get to operating temp ensuring that moisture comes out of the oil.
I was a bit concerned that the engine will take a little longer to warm up since the factory heat exchanger will no longer be warming the oil right after startup. I do not beat on the car when cold anyway, so this really will not be an issue.

I hope to be able to trick the stock cluster oil temp gauge to read properly with the sensor that I put in the thermostat/adapter. I will run both gauges for a while to make sure that temps are under control and to see how far off the stock gauge can get (computed, not true temp). if I get that to work, i'll put together a DIY on it.

FYI those gear drives look and sound great, but have some down sides. Mast has had one on the market for quite some time. They don't play well with knock sensors and for that reason are typically only used on race applications.

Delay

the pistons were on back order and delayed things a bit. that held up the rotating assy because they wanted to balance it as an assy

got the forged assy and things should start going together soon

there was a change:
i added ARP studs for the main caps because i may want more power some day and they are easier to add now than later

the clutch looks good, the slave was not giving me any trouble......but there are several folks that have been experiencing quite a bit of trouble lately. i will probably go back with the what was in the car and hope i don't have any issues. i'll let you know in a few weeks if this is a good decision or not.

Update

the engine is going together and should be ready to go in the car next week.

the plan is to finish the assembly, put on an engine dyno, see how it does and then take to the shop for installation and tuning.

I also learned that the block was honed out 0.005" so now it is a 418ci motor! there is no substitute for cubic inches

I get back from work late next week so the timing is PERFECT!

I added a magnetic drain plug and was getting, in my opinion, "too much" stuff on it.
a magnet around the filter may have reduced the minor bearing wear I had on the front main.
I truly believe that the cam was going away, don't know exactly why though and fell it was unrelated to the chain break...........UNLESS.........it was due to too long of pushrods or too much pretension on the lifters. those will be checked again for sure during the build.

for sure something to consider and easy to add. it is insurance and quite cheap when compared to main studs

Update

A bit bummed . The rod bearings were 0.001" off and the builder wanted things spot on......so got another set coming. The latest is that we'll have the engine on Wed.
The perfect Christmas present
This means, all going well, that the car will be done before the first of the year

i was running ~ 460 or so with the old set up. I've got more CI and a different goal for the cam now..........to make myself feel better i'd like to have numbers north of 500. but to be honest, i just want great torque across the board with enough hp to keep a grin on my face.

Seth is building the motor, the install and tune will be from HP Motorsports in Katy

I CAN"T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!! (i am sooooooo ready to drive the car)
