Differential/Axle Seals

What's the easiest way to get these in? Any special tricks or tools?

I wish I could advise you on this, maybe next week I can since I will be pulling my diff out for a complete rebuild and going to 3.91 gears. From what the seals look like, I think it will be a simple large screwdriver/pry bar to remove them and simple tap into place process once the axles are out of the way.

I have something similar to this-
https://www.amazon.com/Lisle-56750-S.../dp/B0002SRCKG

Be careful not to scratch housing whatever you use especially a screwdriver, and even a tool. GL

They have to be sitting perfectly on the hole, then just tap them in. Not really much to it. If they are any type of cocked then they wont go in.

There is a special tool from kent-moore, but its expensive. I used a loan-a-tool seal driver kit from AutoZone, using the one that fits tight inside the raised seal lip. You have to get the seal squared up or they go in at an angle, which is harder than it sounds. I used the seal driver to get it started, then used a 1/4" extension to make corrections when it got off course, then finished with the seal driver. be careful not to drive it in too deep, you want the seal to be flush with the diff housing, not recessed. Good luck!

Thanks guys for the info/help. I gave up after a few tries, I'll see if AutoZone has that seal driver. Good to know that they need to go in square/flush, that was the piece of advice I was looking for.

I have my diff apart now, the seals have a lip to install against, so careful alignment, then, working around the perimeter of the seal with a rubber mallet, tap in against lip in the case. You might also use a short piece of .25" or thicker aluminum par and a regular steel face hammer. Just make sure to keep it squared up and that it seats against the lip. Just like an oil filter, apply a little lube around the inside lip before installing the axle.

Freeze the seal and use a heat gun to warm up the housing and they should almost drop in.

That seems like a good idea will have to give it a try next time or on the 3:45 diff just setting in the shop to see how it works out.
