Swapping out rear wheel stud

Does anyone know if I could just take off the wheel and bang it out and put the new one in or is it more complicated than that?

Thanks

Would I be able to hit the old stripped one out with an extension and hammer while the wheel is still on?

No you can't. You have to take the wheel off the caliper, the rotor. This is for the front wheel the rear wheel is a whole other thing.
