A8 Transmission Malfunctioning

Hi, this is just to document the problem and the fix for my A8 transmission issue...

I have a 2017 2SS with an A8, after around 9,000 miles I experienced the transmission do a hard downshift and lock itself into a single gear. There were no messages on the DIC about reduced performance or anything but the car would not shift nor allow me to manually shift. After pulling off the road and shutting the car down for a few minutes I was able to restart and drive the car and while it was shifting again each shift was very hard and jerked the car a bit... At this point the CEL was on so I pulled the codes... P0700 and P0716 were both showing... After driving the car a bit more the shifting problem went away and the CEL light turned off and I thought it was just a glitch, so I drove as normal.

The "glitch" came back a few hundred miles later, it seemed to be when I was aggressive with the throttle, but again I was able to shut down the car and after restarting it was shifting again, but the shifts were all hard shifts again.

After the third time this happened I scheduled an appointment with my dealer via the android app and got the vehicle in on 10/19/2017 for service.

Within a few hours I got a call from the dealer that the part needed is the wiring harness for the transmission input speed sensor and it is on back order with no ETA. Apparently the part number has changed as this is a re-worked part to solve an existing issue, which was their explanation for the back order status.

The dealer actually wanted me to come back to the dealership, return the loaner and take my Camaro home until the part arrived! I though this was a very poor solution, not only opening up Chevrolet to huge liability sending a customer off with a known malfunctioning power train in the event of a fatality but also exposing the transmission to further potential damage from improper shifting. I refused and told them the car is not safe and will sit in their possession and each day will count toward my Illinois Lemon Law rights should the part not be sourced and installed successfully within 30 days.

I'm supposed to receive an update from the dealer on the harness tomorrow on 10/24/2017 and they stated they are looking for the harness on both the manufacturing line and directly from the supplier.

The dealer told me a lot of Camaros are having this exact problem, but I see very few posts here or elsewhere on the internet documenting the P0716 issue with 2017 SS A8 transmissions.

My confidence in Chevrolet is pretty much gone due to the fact they can't even stock parts for the current model year. Never thought this would happen with a NEW car... So it sits.

Hopefully they get the harness this week as this is the last few weeks I am going to be able to drive the car before I have to put it in storage for winter, if they do not get the part within the 30 days I will for sure exercise my rights and terminate the relationship, but I hope it does not come to that!

They are also used in various trucks. Not going away any time soon.

The part is apparently not in stock because a defect is being addressed and the as-built parts are being reworked or replaced.

As mentioned, this transmission is used in the light pickups so imagine the magnitude of the problem!

The A10, developed jointly by GM and Ford, is already available in the 2018 Mustang.

Hmmmm....

Well I got an update today (10/24), no part still and the next update is scheduled for November 1st.

That will be two weeks in the shop.

When I get it back, it's going to have to go into storage, so I lost out on the last few weeks of the season.

/edited to be less negative.

I opened a case with GM Customer Care... They called back to tell me the ETA for the part is now mid-December and they are closing my case!

I regret buying this car. I made a big mistake.

I'm sure they'll undervalue if I go buy back with lemon law and I'll still come out the loser.

Sorry to hear that, but at least your driving season was close to over.

I actually agree with Chevy not providing you with a poorly designed or manufactured part. Sounds like a redesign will help others in the near future (although, I know I wouldn't want to hear that if I were you).

The larger question is this.... what part are they using in cars being manufactured today

If you force escalation of this issue, they will get the part from the assembly line.

Service manager

Service Director

General Manager

Owner

Face to face meetings only for effectiveness.

BBB Autoline AND BBB business complaint

Thank you for the advice @Camaro5 - it is appreciated. I did escalate to the Service Director. They were trying to get a complete assembly if they could not get the part by Friday, November 3.

They called a few days later to tell me the part has been located and they are scheduled to receive it on Friday, 11/3.

Friday 11/3 - Dave the Service Director calls me back to tell me the part never came and should be here 11/4.

Monday 11/6 they called me back - the part never came. They claim it's due to come in today 11/6 on the computer - at this point I think they're full of **it.

This is the 19th day it has sat in the shop.

I purposely waited out the first year of the 6th gen to avoid this and here I am.

Unless they suddenly come through, it's time to keep escalating.

General Manager or skip to BBB.

A local BBB complaint filed online usually gets them jumping. BBB.org

After local, file a BBB Autoline complaint - all free assistance.

Keep escalating until you're driving your car.

Request a month's payment (or similar) for the downtime.

Update, they finally came through with the new input speed sensor and harness. I picked up the car on Thursday, the transmission is shifting perfectly now even at very low speeds - where it used to shift so hard it was similar to the sensation of being rear ended by another car... With the weather so cold I can't really get on it to give a true test but I'm satisfied so far.

Took over 21 days but I have my baby back.
