I also use deltran junior Automatic tender.....no issue to date.......was looking to find the Facts on the issue mentioned in this thread.

For the past 15 years I have friends that store exotics for clients. 150+ per winter. They require every single car to have a Battery Tender brand tender on them and have never had any issues.

If you use a battery tender attached to the battery, is it neccesary to disconnect the battery from the car? I would prefer not to so I don't reset anything in the spring

No. Don't disconnect anything. I clip mine on the ground post on the leading edge of the driver's front fender, and one on the positive jump post underhood, plug the tender in the wall. I have never even seen my actual battery, and it stays 100% charged all winter with zero issues. BTW, My car is a 2010, and has been done this way every winter.

I don't know about battery tenders, but I have known people that had batteries explode with a trickle charger. Charging a battery can release small amounts of hydrogen gas. They had the battery in a confined space that allowed the hydrogen to build up. Then they disconnected the charger cables while the charger was still on. The resulting spark ignited the gas and caused a small explosion. Luckily no major damage or injury.

I use positive post and engine block for a ground. Just a better charge for me.

So, I use it and plug it in directly to the battery, is this correct, or should I tie it to the engine positive and ground?

Batteries produce hydrogen when being charged. The engine can build up fuel fumes. The key is to avoid sparks and let things air out before connecting or disconnecting. Charge the battery fully, then hook the tender up before you plug it in to avoid sparks. Mine has a 10 amp and 2 amp setting. The 2 amp is the "tender" setting and is safer.

Make sure you use a tender and NOT a trickle charger. Tenders will cycle off when the battery is fully charged.

You can Google examples of tenders causing fires and I don't leave a tender on our boat. I am most concerned with the tender getting yanked by someone and sparking as it is pulled. I pull the batteries and charge them in the garage or just charge them in the spring as our winter is short. The AGM batteries don't seem to mind being neglected.
