160 degree T-STAT

anyone found any benefits in running a 160 deg thermostat? I know on older cars it would help with heat soaking power loss. My 67 camaro runs better with one in it but I dont know if that would be the case with a 2015.

I've heard that on modern engines changing the thermostat to a lower temperature does more harm than good. The engine never gets to it's real operating temperature and that throws off the built in tolerances that engine was designed with. You might notice some better performance at first with the cooler thermostat but in the long run you will be shortening the engine's life.

No need for a 160 ,factory T stat is what you want .

Search, brother. You'll find many threads to read on all types of forums about this issue. Modern fuel injected motors run hotter for efficiency, and lowering the thermostat does nothing but change the basement temperature, having no effect on the ceiling temp the motor will always reach when driven hard. The motor needs to warm up quickly to avoid the wear and tear that happens normally before the motor warms up. A lower temp stat will just prolong this warm up unless the car is being operated under severe conditions like racing. If you street drive the car, it is not needed. If you want to make the cooling system more efficient, look into a higher efficiency radiator.

Does your car have enough cooling capacity to run right on the t-stat? Most do not. So it means in the summer it doesnt do much of anything, and in the winter may run too cool. Once the car hits 160, it if full open, and just makes it to it takes longer to warm up, which is when the majority of engine wear occurs. You want the car to get to temp ASAP for best longevity.

There are ZERO advantages, and many disadvantages. So do what you want, but you I suggest not touching it.

I drive year around with a 160 stat a fully modded car. My car runs between 192 and 205 when I drive it. Fans cycle and cool the car down.

Interesting! I just scheduled my tune. They are going to put a 160 stat in before tuning. They claim it will allow them to put a couple extra degrees of timing into it with 160 stat. Input or opinions?

Like prostock john said, 160 stat, car runs at 190+. So a 160, 170, 180, 190 will all be fully open. It will just make it so it takes longer to warm up.

This is obviously pointed at me so here is an old corvette book for reference: https://books.google.com/books?id=1T...20myth&f=false

Oh but I'm sure that your going to say this is not a current LS engine reference or it does not have lambo doors or some other excuse why "you'r" right. All I've done is offer a counter point, you'r the one who is now taking this apparent bone you have with me to two threads now....
