Cam whine

Went through my second swap and have acquired the dreaded whine. I didn't resurrect the one thread I found from back this last march but want to know how many others have had this issue. Almost sounds like blower whine. A couple past members have attributed it to bad grinds and eliminated it with new cams with high polished finishes for a little more money. The audio clips I found are an exact copy of what I am hearing. I'm running new comp 231/242NF. I will try to edit with a audio clip ASAP.

I just put in a LG G6X3 (ground by Comp Cams) and now it whines. Sounds like those clips in the other months old thread you referenced. I'm just gonna drive through though. I have no desire to rip the engine apart again. Next time I do, it'll become a 416 forged stroker.

I took this out during the swap: Livernois stage 2B cam (230/240, .591"/.608" int/exh) with 30K miles. It nor the lifters showed any significant wear. That cam was 2-3 years old, also manufactured by Comp Cams. It did not whine though.

Exhaust! It seems that 'whine' noise was an exhaust leak in some case. It seems those exhaust leaks are really small n hard to find. I'll link the thread if I find it. It has been confirmed by a couple of well known LSx shops on this forum. Not that is the case with your car, it could be something else.

Didnt read anything about vaccum leak.

Theres a bunch of crap/noise going on with cam installs lately. That ain't good. Some are talking about a bad batch of camshafts (steel quality might be the problem).

Good luck, keep us updated.

I don't mean to scare you guys but the guys on ls1tech are saying the cams that whine will lead to lobe and lifter damage eventually. Just FYI

Did the whine happen immediately after install and start up or was it later down the road.

Its the cam causing it. Probably a very fine rough finish on the lobes.

It's Chatter on the lobes. We have fixed quite a few over the last few months. We polish the lobes send the cams back the Chatter is gone.

I had a new comp cam installed. I have a whine easily heard in gears 1-3. It was hard to hear when the dyno was done. You can hear it while driving, but not at idle. So how long until a failure with this whine?
