How did the spark plug get impacted? I don't see how that could happen even if the engine is out of time. Thats a fixed distance.

Did you order an adjustable timing set? Notice how in your pictures the crank key points to 3 o'clock and every other picture on Google is between 1-2?
If it's an adjustable set like the one pictured, it sounds like they installed the crank gear using the incorrect key slot like Steve1018 said.

You need to have they key in the same number slot as you align the cam dot with.

It looks like they key is where I circled red, it should be in the green. BOTH at 0.

As this thread moves along, I'm gaining much more respect for my builder and understanding labor costs a little better.

Judging by the last few pictures with multiple valve dents I'd say he had a valve break off at the stem. Its probably lodged in the head.

I can see you have the "0 tooth mark" lined up with the cam. What appears to not be correct is the slot the crankshaft keyway is in. It must also be at the 0 mark. There is 2 corresponding marks on the crank sprocket. Slide off the oil pump drive and take a picture.

From what I can see and as mentioned I think you are missing the point and focusing only on the zero mark. Here is a picture of mine, if you notice when lined up the crank key is at about 2 o'clock, yours appears to be at 3 o'clock indicating the wrong keyway slot was used

Situation sucks OP I feel for you. At this point you have to pull the heads and evaluate the damage. Looks like based on the pictures you are going to have some head damage. You really need to have a good look at the pistons too. On the bright side it looks like some ported heads are in your future!

Get it apart and see where you are at, post results and let the wealth of knowledge on these forums help you move forward. It's an expensive lesson to learn but you won't make that mistake again. Good luck OP
