Gonzo's IBM 2SS/RS

Well, I am starting this thread a bit late - but better late than never.

Some background - I owned a Yellow 1969 Camaro SS/RS back in college. Bought it used and put in a lot a work to get the car to a semi-decent point. Not show quality, but a damn fast car. After college, I joined the Navy and got shipped off for a tour in Japan, so I decided that rather than let the car sit for 3+ year, I would sell it. I have been regretting that decision for most of my life.

So, while in the Navy, I moved around a lot, meet my wife, had kids, bought a mini-van (the low point of my automotive life). Generally have been buying "sensible" vehicles - sedans, SUv's, etc.

Last year, my wife asks me what I wanted for my birthday. I told her that I would had seen the new Camaro that was coming out and wanted to buy one - I was joking with her. Then she asks me "How much are they?" I tell her under $30K for the V6. To my surprise she says "Sure, you've worked hard and earned it."
So I said "I can really buy one?"
To which she replys "No, I want to buy it for you as your Birthday present!"

Now I remember why I married this woman.

Anyway, I start looking for my car and trying to decide on what color, options, etc that I want. In the end, I decide to wait until the 2011 models, mainly because I really like the HUD feature and I figure that GM will have worked most of the bugs out by then.

So August 19th, 2010 I pick up my brand new 2011 2SS/RS in Imperial Blue Metallic with the grey leather interior and 6-speed manual. The only options I got were the polished wheels and the trunk mat. Actually I got them to throw in the mat for free. I was thinking about yellow, decided that yellow was just not my color anymore.

I was not able to get any pictures when I picked it up since it was late at night and pretty dark out.

So here it is about 2 months after I get the car and I have already started to make modifications to it. What I have done so far:

Retractable front license plate

Window tint - 20% rear, 50% front (damn CA laws)

Full catback Magnaflow 3 inch exhaust -thanks to fellow Camaro5 member

MGW shifter with race knob

Full ABL across dash

Gorillia locking lug nut set

Skip shift eliminator

I am currently working on a modified Heritage grille and the Camaro will be going in to get stripes painted in a couple of weeks.

Okay, so I just dropped the car off to get rally stripes painted. Decided not to go with a standard color and spent at least a month looking at different paint combinations. Decided on Mystic Sapphire Pearl - which is a discontinued GM color. I thought it would look good with the IBM. I will post pictures when I get it back from the painter.

Just picked up the Camaro yesterday from the paint shop where it was getting rally stripes painted. The guy that did the painting was very meticulous with prepping and laying out the stripes. 90% of a good paint job is prep - the other 10% is the actual painting. If you take short cuts on prep, the final product does not come out as good as it could have if proper preparation was done. So the painter took a week prepping the car and about two days to paint it. The hardest part of this whole process was picking what color I wanted the stripes to be. After looking at dozens of paint samples, I decided on a discontinued GM color called Mystic Sapphire Pearl. It is a 3 stage paint - most paints are two stages: color coat and a clear coat. The Mystic Sapphire Pearl has a blue base coat that is lighter than the IBM color of my car and the second stage is a clear with metallic and pearl flecks in it that goes on top of the color coat. Then the clear goes over all of this. The final product came out much better than I hoped it would. In dull/overcast light it just looks like a lighter blue. But in the sun, it really brings out the metallic and pearl so it has a goldish multi-color hue to it. Hard to describe. Below are two pictures at different angles and the paint seems to change color. I will get some better pictures on the next sunny day.

Total cost was $1070. I was quoted $1000, but when I chose the color, it cost more for the 3 stage paint.

If you decide to go with paint, be sure to talk to the painter and see some of his work. There was a Camaro that was owned by a guy down the street from the painter I used. He quoted him a price to do his car but the other guy took it to someone else. Saved like $100, but they totally screwed up the part over the front facia. They did not take the time to properly mask and then clear coat it. Ended up looking more like vinyl than paint.

Alot depends on where you take it. I have seen costs from $800 to $2200.

That is what I am so nervous about. I am having a hard time finding a good painter. I would rather spend $800 to $1000 on something that will last forever than spending $400 on vinyl that only lasts 8 years and really doesnt look as good.

The painted stripes look very nice. Much better than the vinyls...:(

What exactly do you mean by retractable front plate? I've never heard of that before.

It has a small motor that allows it to retract under the front bumper. So you can have it up when driving (to be legal in CA), but can hide it when parked so the front end looks clean. It is controlled via a remote key fob controller. Here is a video of one on a Camaro (not mine) that I found on youtube.

From your pic, it looks like you are a Veteran. So wanted to thank you for your service, not just for Veterans Day, but every day you are out there!

The retractable plate is sweet. Love the NY plates. I have also seen plate holders that are clear that can be shaded at the push of a button.. Highly illegal but at the push of a button you can totall black out your plates.
