Seems like it was Sprint. Dumb name. Implies a Suzuki G10 powered car.

How about Caballero for the V6 and Diablo for the V8?
The GMC was at first the Sprint, and in 1978 the name changed to Caballero, the Diablo was a appearance package with a big Firebird like Devil on the Hood. similar to the Black Knight/Royal Knight packages you could get on the El Camino.

My Suggested name for the Pontiac...Easy of Course. G8 GXT

No, they just need to drop letter designation.

That letter/number nonsense crap is for Eurotrash, Lexuses(Lexi?), Acuras, Infinitis (can you really pluralize infinity?) and yeah....Mazda. But Mazda's always done it. (R100, RX2, RX3, RX7, 626, MX3, MX5 etc...)

I'm sticking with Caballero for the V6 and Diablo for the V8.

It kinda makes sense if you delve into it deeply.

G6 = Grand Am 6th Generation
G8 = Grand Prix 8th Generation

G5 could be Sunfire 5th generation...since it kinda looks like there were four redesigns before the G5.

Alright, whats the G for in the G5? And what about rebadged Aveo coming as the G3, known as the Pontiac Wave in Canada. I will never understand that one, the don't have to change anything for the Wave, its already a Pontiac. But nope, they decide to give in an alpha neumeric.

Then there is the Solstice and Torrent. Either rename them to G4 and G9 or give all the other cars real names. One or the other people

oops.

hmm, where were we . . .

G5's just there because of G6, and I guess whatever bonehead came up with the alpha-numeric naming scheme decided to keep it up.
And the G3 is not, I repeat, NOT, coming to the US any time soon.
The Torrent is dead after the 2009 model year, replaced by the GMC Terrain on Theta-II.

In a brilliant move, GM decides to offer a V6 in the G8 ST as well. And not just any V6, but the 300+hp DI V6, which, oh yeah, will also be the new V6 in the sedan for the 2010 model. Oh yeah. Makes you wonder why it didn't come with that V6 in the first place.
