Air Filter maintenance

Whats up everyone, happy holidays to my fellow Z/28-ers.

Question for you guys, how do you guys clean or do maintenance on your air filter? I remember putting a K&N air filter on mostly all my past vehicles. Do we just clean it the same way i.e shake out the dirt, wash with water, let dry and apply the oil, or do we buy a certain oil for it, or dont use any oil for it at all? What do you guys do, would like some opinions on this.

Looks like a dry filter to me. I'm sure it's replace time when it's time

I believe a replacement is only $15 from GM. I usually shake the debris out of it the best I can or run a vacuum over it if I have it out.

No oil for these engines. You'll kill the MA sensors.

Retail on the filter is $141.60 but you can get one a lot cheaper than that.
I do the same as D2M by cleaning with shop vac before an event.

I have heard someone else say not to use an oiled K&N filter cause it would damage the MAF sensor. My Camaro I just bought used has a K&N already on it. So I guess I should replace it with another brand? I will have to wait another week until I get home and see if it is oiled or not.

One little piece of info/detail, the filter says Z/28 on the end. So, for anyone looking for a perfect replacement might want to get the OEM filter.

K&N type oiled filters are fine, the problem arises when owners over-oil them. Only a small amount if necessary. Used them for decades, and have never had a MAF sensor issue.

I think I paid $75 for mine. GM part, with Z/28 on the end. I believe I got it off of Amazon.

if you use a oiled filter, like the K&N on my 3000GT..which has never wrecked the Mitz MAF in 25 years... use a solvent like methanol, MIBK, acetone etc, to enable you to put on a low concentrate of oil. Once the solvent dried voila...you've got a low concentration of oil on the filter..just like K&N dd.

Ideally use acetone, as the carbonyl group will h-bond with the water ..which is completely miscible with it. (methyl-isobutyl ketone >> MIBK) will work too, just takes longer to evaporate.

* Wash the filter with soap and water, Lucas makes a really good water based surfactant for this. I'll look in my garage and add the name later. Removes almost all of the oil/grease
* Rinse with copious water> until it runs clean, not hot water..again you can shrink any cotton filter content.
* Rinse with acetone > until the acetone is water white..it will remove all grease/oil+ solvent soluble stains.
* Finally saturate with a 3% oil concentration in your solvent weight/weight once applied, the filter will dry to a perfect oil application.

Allow the filter to air dry, as any applied heat will shrink the cotton in the filter housing by 5 to 8%... In my career I used to coat textiles, so believe me, any heat..and you'll be buying the amazon filter referenced above.

This is the procedure I've used on my 3000GT, every 3 years now for 25 years, using the quart of K&N oil that came with it. Be sure to allow the filter and solvent to completely dry before putting it back into service. It won't take long if you use acetone as it has a low flash point, and evaporates quickly.

MAS cleaning spray is $9 a can. No big deal. If you over oil the filter and oil gets on the center sensor of the honey comb it will mess up the reading and trigger the check engine light. You just spray some cleaner on the MAS and its all better. I have first hand experience. And I am not the one who over oiled the air filter.
